Good for

  • Checking Apache license headers before a PR
  • Fixing missing or invalid source headers
  • Reviewing dependency license changes

Overview

What it does

This skill uses skywalking-eyes and its license-eye command to check Apache 2.0 headers in source files and verify that the LICENSE file matches the project’s dependencies. If headers are invalid, it guides you through fixing them and checking again. For dependency licenses, it regenerates the LICENSE file from dependency metadata so you can inspect any differences.

When it helps

Use it before submitting a pull request to check file headers or the dependency license list. It also helps after adding new files or changing dependencies.

Example requests

  • “Check the license headers and fix any that are invalid.”
  • “Regenerate the dependency license list and show me the differences.”
  • “Check the license status before I submit this pull request.”

Notes

The license-eye tool is required. Install it with Go’s go install or with Homebrew on macOS. Before committing dependency license differences on macOS or Windows, check whether they come from platform-specific dependencies.

This overview was written by AI (OpenAI Codex) from the public SKILL.md. Check the original below for the exact behavior.

Document check

AI checked the SKILL.md for operations that need care and for setup requirements. The score comes only from actually running the skill (hands-on test).

SafetyAre sending data, deleting files, and running commands disclosed?
BPartly lackingIt modifies headers and regenerates LICENSE, while asking users to review diffs before committing.
Easy setupDoes it need few tools or API keys, and are they documented?
BPartly lackingIt provides Go and macOS Homebrew installation options, but installation is required.

License Checks

Check and fix license compliance using skywalking-eyes. Two CI jobs use this tool:

  1. license-header — verifies all source files have Apache 2.0 headers
  2. dependency-license — verifies the LICENSE file matches current dependencies

Steps

Header check (default, or check argument)

license-eye header check
  • All valid: Output shows valid: N, invalid: 0 — nothing to do.
  • Invalid files found: Fix with license-eye header fix, then re-check.

Header fix (fix argument)

license-eye header fix
license-eye header check

Dependency license check (deps argument)

This regenerates the LICENSE file from dependency metadata and checks for drift:

license-eye dependency resolve --summary ./dist-material/release-docs/LICENSE.tpl || exit 1
if [ ! -z "$(git diff -U0 ./dist-material/release-docs/LICENSE)" ]; then
echo "LICENSE file is not updated correctly"
  git diff -U0 ./dist-material/release-docs/LICENSE
fi

If the LICENSE file changed, review the diff and commit it. Important: CI runs on Linux — some dependencies have platform-specific variants. If you're on macOS/Windows, the LICENSE diff may be a platform artifact. Verify before committing.

Rules

Configuration is in .licenserc.yaml:

  • Java, XML, YAML/YML files require Apache 2.0 headers
  • JSON and Markdown files are excluded (JSON doesn't support comments)
  • Generated files and certain vendor paths are excluded
  • SPI service files (META-INF/services/) require headers (use # comment style)

Installation

# Same version as CI (pinned commit)
go install github.com/apache/skywalking-eyes/cmd/license-eye@5b7ee1731d036b5aac68f8bd3fc9e6f98ada082e

# Or via Homebrew (macOS)
brew install license-eye
