self_awareness

Answer questions about an agent's capabilities, memory, connected services, rules, and previous work by inspecting its actual files and workspace. Distinguish observed facts from inference and explain when evidence is missing, outdated, or incomplete.

OriginalShow the original description

Ground self-referential answers in the agent's actual filesystem. Use when the user asks who the agent is, what it can do, what it knows, what it remembers, what it has built, what services are connected, or what rules it follows.

AI rating90/ 100See how to install

Good for

  • Check what the agent can do for an active project
  • Review what the agent remembers about the user
  • Confirm connected services and operating rules
  • Find outputs the agent has already created

Overview

What it does

Answer questions about the agent itself by checking actual files and the current workspace. Topics include its role, available capabilities, knowledge, memory, connected services, operating rules, and work it has already created. The skill separates verified facts from inference and provides supporting file paths when useful.

When it helps

Use it to find out what you can ask the agent to do or whether it remembers an earlier conversation. Capabilities are explained in terms of your life and active projects, rather than simply presented as a list of tools. Relevant files are read again for each request. If information about memory or connected services is outdated or only partly verifiable, the answer explains those limits.

Example requests

  • “What tasks can you help with on my current project?”
  • “Tell me what you remember about me and show the supporting evidence.”
  • “Check which services are connected and what you have created so far.”

Notes

The environment must support inspection through read or exec. If the configuration files, memory files, or workspace folders needed to support an answer are missing, the skill states that directly. It does not fill gaps with unverified information. Connection recommendations and optional dashboards are addressed when the user requests them.

This overview was written by AI (OpenAI Codex) from the public SKILL.md. Check the original below for the exact behavior.

Objective evaluation

AI rated this skill on four points using only the contents of its SKILL.md. Stars and popularity are not taken into account.

Clear instructionsIs it clear when to use it and what it does?
AGoodIt explicitly covers questions about the agent's role, capabilities, memory, connections, and other aspects of itself.
Concrete stepsAre steps, inputs, outputs, and examples spelled out?
AGoodIt provides cat, ls, and find inspection examples and response rules for separating facts from inference.
SafetyAre sending data, deleting files, and running commands disclosed?
AGoodThe listed inspections use cat, ls, and find to read information; they do not delete files or send data externally.
Easy setupDoes it need few tools or API keys, and are they documented?
BPartly lackingIt assumes read or exec access and particular file locations, without instructions for setting up the environment.

The total counts each point as A = 25, B = 15, C = 5. Rated by AI (OpenAI Codex) as of Oct 23, 2026. Treat it as a guide and read the original before installing.

SKILL.md (original)

Review the instructions the agent will receive before you install.

Self-Awareness

Purpose

Answer self-referential questions from observed files and workspace state, not guesses or training-memory.

Tooling

Use read or exec to inspect the current environment before answering.

Common probes:

cat ~/IDENTITY.md ~/SOUL.md ~/AGENTS.md ~/TOOLS.md 2>/dev/null
cat ~/USER.md ~/MEMORY.md ~/TOMM.md 2>/dev/null
ls ~/memory/*.md 2>/dev/null
ls /opt/hatch/skills/ ~/workspace/skills/ 2>/dev/null
find ~/workspace/ -maxdepth 3 -type f \( -name "*.html" -o -name "*.md" -o -name "*.json" \) 2>/dev/null

Read references/question_types.md when the user asks a specific self-awareness question and you need the exact traversal for that question type.

Read references/extensions.md only when the user explicitly wants connection recommendations or an optional self-awareness dashboard.

Operating Rules

  1. Re-read the relevant files every time. Never answer from cached assumptions.
  2. If a file or directory is missing, say that directly instead of filling the gap.
  3. Organize capability answers around the user's life domains and active projects, not a flat tool list.
  4. Separate observed facts from inference. Cite file paths when it helps the user trust the answer.
  5. Be explicit about stale or partial evidence, especially for memory, connected services, or built items.
  6. Stay within the scope of the question. Do not append skill ideas, connection advice, or dashboards unless the user asked for them.
