wide_research

Research many companies, people, or topics in parallel using the same required fields. The skill coordinates individual research tasks, combines results into a consistent structure, and reports coverage, failed inputs, and remaining gaps.

OriginalShow the original description

Use when the user needs broad parallel research across many independent inputs with a shared output schema.

AI rating90/ 100See how to install

Good for

  • Researching multiple companies using the same fields
  • Screening many people or topics
  • Combining independent findings into a consistent result set
  • Checking research coverage and unresolved gaps

Overview

What it does

Researches many companies, people, or topics in parallel using the same fields for every input, then combines the findings into a consistent format. It first removes duplicates and normalizes the inputs. A manager subagent then assigns a worker to each input. The combined output includes the total number of inputs, success and failure counts, research results, failed inputs, and notes, making the extent of completed research explicit.

When it helps

Use it to compare candidate companies or people against shared criteria, or to conduct initial research across a large set of subjects. It suits research where each subject can be investigated independently and the information fields are already defined.

Example requests

  • “Research these companies in parallel, using the same fields for business activities and target customers.”
  • “Summarize each topic in the specified format, and report how many were researched and which items remain unresolved.”

Notes

The workflow requires subagents. It is not intended for research on a single subject or tasks where one investigation must finish before the next can begin. Define the required fields and their types beforehand. When completeness matters, retry only failed inputs once, where feasible.

Objective evaluation

AI rated this skill on four points using only the contents of its SKILL.md. Stars and popularity are not taken into account.

Clear instructionsIs it clear when to use it and what it does?
AGoodIt specifies parallel research across independent inputs with a shared output schema and identifies tasks outside its scope.
Concrete stepsAre steps, inputs, outputs, and examples spelled out?
AGoodIt specifies input requirements, six output fields, deduplication, worker assignment, and retry rules for failed inputs.
SafetyAre sending data, deleting files, and running commands disclosed?
AGoodThe documented operations are research and aggregation; there are no instructions to delete files or read credentials.
Easy setupDoes it need few tools or API keys, and are they documented?
BPartly lackingManager and worker subagents are required, but instructions for preparing a supporting environment are absent.

The total counts each point as A = 25, B = 15, C = 5. Rated by AI (OpenAI Codex) as of Oct 24, 2026. Treat it as a guide and read the original before installing.

Wide Research

Purpose

Coordinate one manager subagent that fans out the same research task across many independent inputs and returns a single normalized result set.

When to Use

  • The task can be split into many independent subtasks (for example, one company/person/topic per input).
  • Each subtask should return the same structured fields.
  • The user asks for "wide research", "parallel research", or high-volume lookup/screening.

Do not use this workflow for single-item tasks or when subtasks depend on each other.

Tooling

Use exactly one manager subagent for the overall operation.

Manager input contract:

  • operation_brief: one concise sentence.
  • inputs: one independent item per element.
  • output_schema: required fields and allowed types.
  • worker_prompt_template: per-input instructions.
  • completion_format: exact JSON object shape for the manager's final response.

Manager output contract:

  • total
  • success_count
  • failure_count
  • results
  • failures
  • notes

Operating Rules

  1. Deduplicate and normalize the input list before spawning the manager.
  2. Keep the output schema minimal and explicit; avoid optional or free-form fields unless the user asked for them.
  3. Use one manager coordinator for one user goal; do not fan out multiple sibling root-level subagents.
  4. Instruct the manager to assign one worker per input and keep each worker scoped to its own item.
  5. If completeness matters and some inputs fail, retry only the failed inputs, once, when feasible.
  6. Reply to the user immediately that wide research has started; do not block on completion.
  7. In the final user-facing output, always report coverage (success_count/total) and unresolved gaps.
