sandbox-execution-fallback

Recover failed Python tasks by saving the code as a script and running it through the system shell. The workflow covers spreadsheet generation, data processing, output verification, and troubleshooting missing packages, paths, or permissions.

Recover from execute_code_sandbox failures by writing Python scripts to files and executing via run_shell

Good for

  • Retry spreadsheet generation after a sandbox failure
  • Rerun data processing that timed out
  • Run scripts with system-installed Python libraries
  • Verify files produced by a recovered task

Sandbox Execution Fallback

When to Use

Apply this pattern when execute_code_sandbox fails or times out, particularly for:

  • Spreadsheet generation (pandas, openpyxl, xlsxwriter)
  • Complex data processing with file I/O
  • Tasks requiring external library imports
  • Long-running computations that hit timeout limits

Recovery Procedure

Step 1: Capture the Python Code

Extract or reconstruct the Python code that failed in execute_code_sandbox.

Step 2: Write Code to File

Use write_file to save the script with a .py extension:

write_file(
    path="script_name.py",
    content="""
import pandas as pd
# Your implementation here
"""
)

Step 3: Execute via run_shell

Run the script using the system Python interpreter:

run_shell(command="python3 script_name.py")

Step 4: Verify Output

Confirm the results match expected outputs (files created, data processed correctly, etc.).

Complete Example

# Failed: execute_code_sandbox with pandas Excel generation

# Recovery - Step 1 & 2: Write script to file
write_file(
    path="generate_pnl_report.py",
    content="""
import pandas as pd
from openpyxl import Workbook

# Create sample data
data = {
    'Category': ['Revenue', 'Expenses', 'Tax'],
    'Amount': [10000, 3000, 500]
}
df = pd.DataFrame(data)

# Write to Excel
df.to_excel('pnl_report.xlsx', index=False)
print('Report generated: pnl_report.xlsx')
"""
)

# Step 3: Execute via shell
run_shell(command="python3 generate_pnl_report.py")

# Step 4: Verify file was created
run_shell(command="ls -la pnl_report.xlsx")

Why This Works

EnvironmentSandboxed, limitedFull system Python
File I/ORestrictedFull access
TimeoutStrict limitsMore flexible
Library SupportMay be limitedSystem-installed packages
ResultIdentical outputIdentical output

Best Practices

  1. Use descriptive filenames - e.g., generate_report.py, process_data.py
  2. Add error handling - Include try/except blocks in your script
  3. Print progress - Use print statements for debugging
  4. Clean up - Remove temporary scripts after successful execution if needed
  5. Verify results - Always confirm outputs before proceeding

Common Use Cases

  • Excel/CSV report generation
  • Data transformation pipelines
  • Batch file processing
  • API data aggregation
  • Chart and visualization creation

Troubleshooting

If run_shell also fails:

  1. Check Python is available: run_shell(command="python3 --version")
  2. Install missing packages: run_shell(command="pip3 install pandas openpyxl")
  3. Check file permissions and paths
  4. Review stderr output for specific errors

Prepare audio stems, the separate parts of a track, for mixing by matching their durations with silence, loops, or crossfades. Verify each generated and processed file before moving to the next production step.

  • Match audio parts with different durations
  • Extend drums and melodic parts using suitable methods
  • Check audio specifications before mixing

Produce audio in separate stems, meaning individual instrument tracks, and verify each output as you go. Align track lengths with silence, loops, or crossfades, then apply effects, mix a master, and package the files.

  • Align instrument tracks to a reference audio file
  • Choose how to extend tracks that are too short
  • Verify audio properties after generation and effects

Build serverless endpoints that relay external API requests for a dashboard while keeping API keys on the server. Includes Vercel examples for input checks, caching, cross-origin access, and consistent JSON responses.

  • Connect a dashboard to external APIs without exposing API keys
  • Create endpoints for stock quotes and news
  • Standardize API responses and error handling

Produce a master track and separate audio parts through a structured Python workflow. Apply filters and reverb, export WAV files with consistent settings, package them in a ZIP archive, and check that the deliverables meet the requested specifications.

  • Export a master track with separate audio parts
  • Apply filters and reverb to audio
  • Check duration and format across deliverables

Keep document creation moving when web searches and page retrieval repeatedly fail. The skill preserves the original task, uses the model’s existing knowledge, and clearly identifies information that could not be checked against external sources.

  • Continue drafting after repeated web retrieval failures
  • Preserve task requirements during network errors
  • Mark information that could not be externally verified

When Python execution repeatedly fails in execute_code_sandbox, use a file-based alternative: save the script, run it through the shell, and capture results or errors. The guidance covers paths, imports, timeouts, structured output, and optional cleanup.

  • Retry Python work through the shell after repeated sandbox failures
  • Run longer tasks with an adjusted timeout
  • Execute Python work that needs multiple files or system utilities
