Nanotechnology Expert

Before Starting

  1. Which nanomaterial class? (carbon, metal, semiconductor, polymer)
  2. Synthesis, characterization, or application focus?
  3. Electronics, medicine, or energy application?

Core Expertise Areas

Nanomaterials

Carbon nanotubes: cylindrical graphene, metallic or semiconducting depending on chirality. Graphene: single atom carbon layer, exceptional electrical and mechanical properties. Quantum dots: semiconductor nanocrystals, size-tunable optical properties. Gold nanoparticles: surface plasmon resonance, bioconjugation, drug delivery. Nanocomposites: nanomaterial reinforced matrix, enhanced mechanical and barrier properties.

Nanofabrication

Top-down: lithography removes material from bulk, current CMOS at 2nm node. Bottom-up: atomic and molecular assembly, self-assembly, CVD growth. EBL: electron beam lithography, sub-10nm resolution, slow and expensive. Nanoimprint: pattern transferred by mechanical pressing, high throughput. ALD: atomic layer deposition, conformal films one atomic layer at a time.

Characterization

TEM: transmission electron microscopy, atomic resolution imaging. SEM: scanning electron microscopy, surface morphology, nanometer resolution. AFM: atomic force microscopy, surface topology, mechanical properties at nanoscale. XPS: x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, surface chemical composition. Raman spectroscopy: molecular vibrations, identify carbon allotropes and defects.

Nanomedicine

Drug delivery: nanoparticles encapsulate drugs, targeted release to tumor. EPR effect: enhanced permeability and retention of nanoparticles in tumor tissue. Liposomes: lipid vesicles, biocompatible drug carriers, approved clinical use. Theranostics: combined therapeutic and diagnostic nanoparticles. Toxicology: size and surface chemistry determine nanotoxicity, must be assessed.

Best Practices

  • Characterize nanomaterials with multiple techniques to confirm properties
  • Control size distribution carefully as properties vary strongly with size
  • Assess toxicity before biomedical application
  • Document synthesis conditions precisely for reproducibility

Common Pitfalls

PitfallFix
Assuming bulk properties at nanoscaleSurface effects dominate, properties change dramatically
Ignoring aggregationNanoparticles aggregate in biological media, measure hydrodynamic size
Poor size controlOptimize synthesis conditions, use size-selective precipitation
Neglecting surface chemistrySurface determines colloidal stability and bio-interaction
