.NET Solution & Project Setup

Targets .NET 9 SDK (9.0.200+) and later, where noted.

Solution File

  • Use .slnx (XML solution format), not .sln. Default for dotnet new sln since .NET 10 SDK; available since 9.0.200.
  • Migrate an existing solution: dotnet sln migrate (creates .slnx, keeps .sln untouched).
  • Create new: dotnet new sln (or --format sln to opt back out).

Repository Root Checklist

FilePurpose
<Name>.slnxsolution definition
.editorconfigcode style + analyzer severities, enforced at build via EnforceCodeStyleInBuild
Directory.Build.propsMSBuild properties shared by every project
Directory.Packages.propscentral package management (CPM) — package versions in one place
global.jsonpin SDK version (rollForward: latestMinor)
.gitattributesenforce line endings (* text=auto eol=lf) for deterministic diffs
NuGet.configpackage sources; add source mapping to silence NU1507 when using CPM with >1 source
.config/dotnet-tools.jsonlocal tool manifest (dotnet tool restore)

Directory.Build.props — Required Properties

PropertyValueWhy
TargetFrameworke.g. net10.0single source of truth for the whole repo
LangVersionlatestnewest C# features as soon as the SDK supports them
Nullableenablenullable reference type analysis
ImplicitUsingsenabledrop boilerplate using directives
TreatWarningsAsErrorstruefail the build instead of accumulating warnings
EnforceCodeStyleInBuildtrue.editorconfig IDE0xxx style rules run on dotnet build, not just in the IDE
Deterministictruebyte-identical assemblies for identical inputs (default true already, set explicitly)
EnableNETAnalyzerstruerun the built-in CAxxxx code-quality analyzers

Full example + extra hardening properties (AnalysisLevel, AnalysisMode, test-project overrides, versioning) → references/directory-build-props.md.

SourceLink

Every packable/publishable project needs SourceLink so consumers can step into source while debugging:

<PropertyGroup>
  <PublishRepositoryUrl>true</PublishRepositoryUrl>
  <EmbedUntrackedSources>true</EmbedUntrackedSources>
  <DebugType>portable</DebugType>
  <ContinuousIntegrationBuild Condition="'$(CI)' == 'true'">true</ContinuousIntegrationBuild>
</PropertyGroup>
<ItemGroup>
  <PackageReference Include="Microsoft.SourceLink.GitHub" Version="8.0.0" PrivateAssets="All" />
</ItemGroup>

ContinuousIntegrationBuild must only be true on CI (it maps local paths to repo-relative paths); leaving it true locally breaks the "Just My Code" experience. Details, symbol packages, alternate providers → references/directory-build-props.md.

Central Package Management

Directory.Packages.props sets ManagePackageVersionsCentrally=true and declares <PackageVersion> items; every project's <PackageReference> then omits Version. Full setup, GlobalPackageReference, transitive pinning, override rules → references/central-package-management.md.

Design and scaffold multi-agent squads/swarms using the graph orchestration pattern (nodes = agents, edges = dependencies/data flow). USE FOR: designing a coordination topology for a multi-agent squad (sequential pipeline, parallel fan-out/aggregation, branching, feedback loop, cyclic); building an orchestrator agent that delegates to specialist agents; setting up an adversarial/tribunal code or document review with independent reviewers; scaffolding a squad's agent files for a target coding-agent harness (e.g. Copilot CLI or Claude Code custom agents). DO NOT USE FOR: authoring a single agent's frontmatter/prompt body (use copilot-cli-custom-agents, claude-code-custom-agents, or the target harness's own skill); SKILL.md authoring (use create-skill); ad-hoc multi-agent chat with no explicit topology.

Author and maintain AGENTS.md files — the open, tool-agnostic format for giving coding agents project context. Use when: creating AGENTS.md; writing an agent instructions file; root or nested AGENTS.md for monorepos; migrating CLAUDE.md, AGENT.md, .cursor/rules, or copilot-instructions.md to AGENTS.md; greenfield project setup before code exists; brownfield onboarding for an existing codebase; documenting build/test/lint commands, code style, PR/commit conventions, and security considerations for agents; AGENTS.md discovery and precedence rules. Works for any language, framework, or project size. DO NOT USE FOR: authoring SKILL.md skill files (use create-skill); APM package/plugin authoring (use apm-producer); language-specific style rules (use language skills e.g. csharp-best-practices).
