helmert-datum-transformation

Abstract math for the 7-parameter (Helmert) similarity transformation used to convert coordinates between geodetic datums. USE FOR: implementing datum-to-datum 3D coordinate transformations; understanding the 7 Helmert parameters (3 translations, 3 rotations, 1 scale); applying the linearized vs. full rotation matrix form; composing transformations; transforming to/from WGS84. DO NOT USE FOR: geodetic coordinate validation (use geodetic-coordinate-bounds); reference ellipsoid parameters (use reference-ellipsoids); map projections.

Helmert Datum Transformation

Definition

The 7-parameter Helmert transformation converts geocentric Cartesian coordinates (X, Y, Z) from one datum to another. Also called similarity transformation or Bursa-Wolf model.

Parameters:

SymbolNameUnit
ΔX, ΔY, ΔZTranslation (origin shift)metres
Rₓ, Rᵧ, R_zRotation (small angles)arcseconds (or radians)
ΔSScale factor changeppm (parts per million)

Linearized Formula (Small Rotations)

When Rₓ, Rᵧ, R_z << 1 radian (typically < 10 arcsec for datum shifts):

⎡X'⎤ ⎡ΔX⎤ ⎡ 1 R_z −Rᵧ⎤ ⎡X⎤
⎢Y'⎥ = ⎢ΔY⎥ + (1+ΔS) ⎢−R_z 1 Rₓ ⎥ ⎢Y⎥
⎣Z'⎦ ⎣ΔZ⎦ ⎣ Rᵧ −Rₓ 1 ⎦ ⎣Z⎦

ΔS is the fractional scale: ΔS = 0 means no scale change. Applied as (1 + ΔS × 10⁻⁶) when given in ppm.

Inverse Transformation

To reverse the transformation (source ← target), negate all 7 parameters:

(−ΔX, −ΔY, −ΔZ, −Rₓ, −Rᵧ, −R_z, −ΔS)

This is exact for the linearized form. For the full rotation matrix form, invert the rotation matrix.

WGS84 as Reference

WGS84 geocentric coordinates are the common hub. Typical workflow:

Source datum → WGS84 → Target datum

WGS84 ↔ WGS72 parameters are defined in the WGS84 standard. For national grids, parameters are published by the national geodetic authority (e.g., EPSG registry).

Sign Convention

Two conventions exist — confirm which is in use:

  1. Coordinate Frame (used by EPSG): rotations rotate the coordinate frame
  2. Position Vector (Bursa-Wolf): rotations rotate the position vector

The rotation matrix entries swap sign between conventions. The parameters are numerically identical but with opposite rotation signs.

Design and scaffold multi-agent squads/swarms using the graph orchestration pattern (nodes = agents, edges = dependencies/data flow). USE FOR: designing a coordination topology for a multi-agent squad (sequential pipeline, parallel fan-out/aggregation, branching, feedback loop, cyclic); building an orchestrator agent that delegates to specialist agents; setting up an adversarial/tribunal code or document review with independent reviewers; scaffolding a squad's agent files for a target coding-agent harness (e.g. Copilot CLI or Claude Code custom agents). DO NOT USE FOR: authoring a single agent's frontmatter/prompt body (use copilot-cli-custom-agents, claude-code-custom-agents, or the target harness's own skill); SKILL.md authoring (use create-skill); ad-hoc multi-agent chat with no explicit topology.

Find, inspect, query, redact, and troubleshoot logs, transcripts, sessions, and OpenTelemetry data from coding-agent harnesses on Windows, macOS, Linux, and WSL. USE FOR: GitHub Copilot in VS Code; Copilot CLI; Claude Code; OpenAI Codex; Gemini CLI; OpenCode; Cursor, Windsurf, Kiro, or other VS Code-family editors; locating log files; diagnosing tool or model failures; correlating turns, subagents, and tool calls; querying JSONL, plaintext, or SQLite without spending model tokens; preparing sanitized diagnostics. DO NOT USE FOR: application logs unrelated to coding agents; uploading raw logs; treating unstable transcript schemas as public APIs.

Author and maintain AGENTS.md files — the open, tool-agnostic format for giving coding agents project context. Use when: creating AGENTS.md; writing an agent instructions file; root or nested AGENTS.md for monorepos; migrating CLAUDE.md, AGENT.md, .cursor/rules, or copilot-instructions.md to AGENTS.md; greenfield project setup before code exists; brownfield onboarding for an existing codebase; documenting build/test/lint commands, code style, PR/commit conventions, and security considerations for agents; AGENTS.md discovery and precedence rules. Works for any language, framework, or project size. DO NOT USE FOR: authoring SKILL.md skill files (use create-skill); APM package/plugin authoring (use apm-producer); language-specific style rules (use language skills e.g. csharp-best-practices).
