AI rating90/ 100See how to install

Good for

  • Finding reaction GIFs for chat
  • Downloading celebration GIFs
  • Getting lightweight preview URLs
  • Checking GIF titles and dimensions

Overview

What it does

Search Tenor for GIFs that match your keywords, retrieve their image URLs, or download them as files. You can choose standard GIFs, smaller previews, or video formats. The skill also includes steps for reviewing search results together with their titles, URLs, and image dimensions. Set the number of results, language, and content safety filter to narrow the candidates for your purpose.

When it helps

Use it to find reaction images that express how you feel in a chat, or animated material to accompany your content. It also helps when you need a lightweight preview URL or want to check the dimensions of several candidates before saving one. The URLs you retrieve can also display images in Markdown.

Example requests

  • “Find celebration GIFs on Tenor and save the first result.”
  • “Find three cat GIFs and list their titles and image dimensions.”
  • “Get lightweight preview URLs for use in chat.”

Notes

You need curl, jq, and a Tenor API key. Set the key in TENOR_API_KEY. Spaces and special characters in search terms must be URL-encoded.

This overview was written by AI (OpenAI Codex) from the public SKILL.md. Check the original below for the exact behavior.

Objective evaluation

AI rated this skill on four points using only the contents of its SKILL.md. Stars and popularity are not taken into account.

Clear instructionsIs it clear when to use it and what it does?
AGoodThe material explicitly identifies chat reactions as a use case and describes searching Tenor and saving GIFs.
Concrete stepsAre steps, inputs, outputs, and examples spelled out?
AGoodCommand examples cover searching, downloading, and retrieving metadata, with URL and dimension fields specified.
SafetyAre sending data, deleting files, and running commands disclosed?
BPartly lackingTenor requests and saving files with curl are explicit, but there is no check before overwriting an existing file.
Easy setupDoes it need few tools or API keys, and are they documented?
AGoodThe material lists curl and jq requirements, links to Tenor API key acquisition, and explains setting TENOR_API_KEY.

The total counts each point as A = 25, B = 15, C = 5. Rated by AI (OpenAI Codex) as of Oct 20, 2026. Treat it as a guide and read the original before installing.

GIF Search (Tenor API)

Search and download GIFs directly via the Tenor API using curl. No extra tools needed.

When to use

Useful for finding reaction GIFs, creating visual content, and sending GIFs in chat.

Setup

Set your Tenor API key in your environment (add to ${HERMES_HOME:-~/.hermes}/.env):

TENOR_API_KEY=your_key_here

Get a free API key at https://developers.google.com/tenor/guides/quickstart — the Google Cloud Console Tenor API key is free and has generous rate limits.

Prerequisites

  • curl and jq (both standard on macOS/Linux)
  • TENOR_API_KEY environment variable

Search for GIFs

# Search and get GIF URLs
curl -s "https://tenor.googleapis.com/v2/search?q=thumbs+up&limit=5&key=${TENOR_API_KEY}" | jq -r '.results[].media_formats.gif.url'

# Get smaller/preview versions
curl -s "https://tenor.googleapis.com/v2/search?q=nice+work&limit=3&key=${TENOR_API_KEY}" | jq -r '.results[].media_formats.tinygif.url'

Download a GIF

# Search and download the top result
URL=$(curl -s "https://tenor.googleapis.com/v2/search?q=celebration&limit=1&key=${TENOR_API_KEY}" | jq -r '.results[0].media_formats.gif.url')
curl -sL "$URL" -o celebration.gif

Get Full Metadata

curl -s "https://tenor.googleapis.com/v2/search?q=cat&limit=3&key=${TENOR_API_KEY}" | jq '.results[] | {title: .title, url: .media_formats.gif.url, preview: .media_formats.tinygif.url, dimensions: .media_formats.gif.dims}'
