AI rating90/ 100See how to install

Good for

  • Turn a recorded meeting into text
  • Label speakers in an interview transcript
  • Save a transcript as JSON for further processing
  • Specify the language when transcribing an audio file

Overview

What it does

Send an audio file to OpenAI's transcription API and save the result as text or JSON. The included transcribe.sh lets you choose the model, output location, and language. By default, it uses gpt-4o-transcribe and saves to a file with .txt appended to the input filename. You can also select gpt-4o-mini-transcribe or whisper-1.

When it helps

Use it to read through meeting or interview recordings, or pass a transcript to another process. If you need to distinguish speakers, gpt-4o-transcribe-diarize can label their contributions. Examples for regular transcription also show how to provide names and other context through a prompt.

Example requests

  • “Transcribe this meeting recording and save it as text.”
  • “Transcribe this interview with speaker labels.”
  • “Specify the audio language and output the transcript as JSON.”

Notes

Requires curl, node, and OPENAI_API_KEY. The hosted API has a 25 MB upload limit. Supported formats include mp3, mp4, m4a, wav, and webm. The speaker-labeling model does not support --prompt. Set OPENAI_BASE_URL to connect through a compatible proxy or local gateway.

This overview was written by AI (OpenAI Codex) from the public SKILL.md. Check the original below for the exact behavior.

Objective evaluation

AI rated this skill on four points using only the contents of its SKILL.md. Stars and popularity are not taken into account.

Clear instructionsIs it clear when to use it and what it does?
AGoodIt explicitly describes sending audio to the transcription API and obtaining text or JSON.
Concrete stepsAre steps, inputs, outputs, and examples spelled out?
AGoodExamples specify transcribe.sh commands, model selection, output paths, and defaults.
SafetyAre sending data, deleting files, and running commands disclosed?
BPartly lackingAudio uploads and API key configuration are explicit, but no confirmation procedure before uploading is provided.
Easy setupDoes it need few tools or API keys, and are they documented?
AGoodIt lists curl, node, and OPENAI_API_KEY requirements and explains how to configure the key.

The total counts each point as A = 25, B = 15, C = 5. Rated by AI (OpenAI Codex) as of Oct 19, 2026. Treat it as a guide and read the original before installing.

OpenAI transcriptions API

Transcribe audio through /v1/audio/transcriptions. Set OPENAI_BASE_URL for an OpenAI-compatible proxy or local gateway.

Quick start

{baseDir}/scripts/transcribe.sh /path/to/audio.m4a

Defaults:

  • Model: gpt-4o-transcribe
  • Output: <input>.txt

Useful flags

{baseDir}/scripts/transcribe.sh /path/to/audio.ogg --model gpt-4o-transcribe --out /tmp/transcript.txt
{baseDir}/scripts/transcribe.sh /path/to/audio.ogg --model gpt-4o-mini-transcribe
{baseDir}/scripts/transcribe.sh /path/to/audio.ogg --model gpt-4o-transcribe-diarize --json
{baseDir}/scripts/transcribe.sh /path/to/audio.ogg --model whisper-1
{baseDir}/scripts/transcribe.sh /path/to/audio.m4a --language en
{baseDir}/scripts/transcribe.sh /path/to/audio.m4a --prompt "Speaker names: Peter, Daniel"
{baseDir}/scripts/transcribe.sh /path/to/audio.m4a --json --out /tmp/transcript.json

Notes:

  • Supported upload formats include mp3, mp4, mpeg, mpga, m4a, wav, webm.
  • 25 MB upload limit on the hosted API.
  • Use diarize for speaker labels; script sends chunking_strategy=auto and rejects --prompt.

API key

Set OPENAI_API_KEY, or configure it in the active OpenClaw config file ($OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATH, default ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json). Optionally set OPENAI_BASE_URL:

{
  skills: {
    "openai-whisper-api": {
      apiKey: "OPENAI_KEY_HERE",
    },
  },
}
