AI rating90/ 100See how to install

Good for

  • Reading text aloud on your computer
  • Saving spoken replies as audio files
  • Choosing and checking a reading voice
  • Adjusting pronunciation, numbers, and pauses
  • Adding whispered or expressive delivery

Overview

What it does

Uses ElevenLabs to turn text into speech for local playback or saving as an audio file. With sag, you can choose a voice, adjust the spelling of difficult words, control how numbers and units are read, and specify a language. Supported models also accept tags for whispers, emotion, laughter, and pauses. When a spoken reply is requested, the workflow returns the generated file.

When it helps

Use it to check text by listening or receive an explanation as audio. It also helps you try different voices and delivery styles, including calm speech and more expressive readings. Commands for listing voices and viewing model-specific tips are included.

Example requests

  • “Read this text in Roger’s voice.”
  • “Make an audio file with a whispered voice and short pauses.”
  • “Adjust how the numbers and units are pronounced, then read it aloud.”

Notes

Install sag and provide an ElevenLabs API key through an environment variable such as ELEVENLABS_API_KEY or a key file. The default model is eleven_v3. Pause syntax depends on the model: v3 uses tags such as [pause], while v2 models support SSML <break>. Confirm the voice and speaker before generating long audio.

Clear instructionsIs it clear when to use it and what it does?
AGoodIt states that it uses ElevenLabs for speech generation and local playback, and describes spoken replies.
Concrete stepsAre steps, inputs, outputs, and examples spelled out?
AGoodIt provides sag commands, model-specific pronunciation and pause guidance, and instructions for generating and returning audio files.
SafetyAre sending data, deleting files, and running commands disclosed?
BPartly lackingIt handles API keys and sending audio files, but provides no confirmation procedure for text transmitted externally.
Easy setupDoes it need few tools or API keys, and are they documented?
AGoodIt provides brew installation metadata and authentication options using ELEVENLABS_API_KEY or a key file.

The total counts each point as A = 25, B = 15, C = 5. Rated by AI (OpenAI Codex) as of Oct 19, 2026. Treat it as a guide and read the original before installing.

sag

Use sag for ElevenLabs TTS with local playback.

API key (required)

  • ELEVENLABS_API_KEY (preferred)
  • SAG_API_KEY also supported by the CLI
  • Key file via --api-key-file, ELEVENLABS_API_KEY_FILE, or SAG_API_KEY_FILE

Quick start

  • sag "Hello there"
  • sag speak -v "Roger" "Hello"
  • sag voices
  • sag prompting (model-specific tips)

Model notes

  • Default: eleven_v3 (expressive)
  • Stable: eleven_multilingual_v2
  • Fast: eleven_flash_v2_5

Pronunciation + delivery rules

  • First fix: respell (e.g. "key-note"), add hyphens, adjust casing.
  • Numbers/units/URLs: --normalize auto (or off if it harms names).
  • Language bias: --lang en|de|fr|... to guide normalization.
  • v3: SSML <break> not supported; use [pause], [short pause], [long pause].
  • v2/v2.5: SSML <break time="1.5s" /> supported; <phoneme> not exposed in sag.

v3 audio tags (put at the entrance of a line)

  • [whispers], [shouts], [sings]
  • [laughs], [starts laughing], [sighs], [exhales]
  • [sarcastic], [curious], [excited], [crying], [mischievously]
  • Example: sag "[whispers] keep this quiet. [short pause] ok?"

Voice defaults

  • ELEVENLABS_VOICE_ID or SAG_VOICE_ID

Confirm voice + speaker before long output.

Chat voice responses

When the user asks for a "voice" reply (e.g., "crazy scientist voice", "explain in voice"), generate audio and send it:

# Generate audio file
sag -v Clawd -o /tmp/voice-reply.mp3 "Your message here"

# Then include in reply:
# MEDIA:/tmp/voice-reply.mp3

Voice character tips:

  • Crazy scientist: Use [excited] tags, dramatic pauses [short pause], vary intensity
  • Calm: Use [whispers] or slower pacing
  • Dramatic: Use [sings] or [shouts] sparingly

Default voice for Clawd: lj2rcrvANS3gaWWnczSX (or just -v Clawd)
