Good for

  • Finding past Slack conversations
  • Reviewing messages from the last seven days
  • Counting archived messages or producing rankings
  • Checking and refreshing a stale Slack archive

Overview

What it does

Search locally saved Slack conversations, review messages from a specified period, and calculate exact counts. For questions about recent discussions, the skill first checks how current the archive is and syncs it when outdated or requested. It can sync from Slack Desktop's cache or the API, and uses read-only SQL queries to calculate counts and rankings.

When it helps

Use it to find something previously discussed on Slack or review recent conversations within a defined period and result limit. Results include workspace and channel names, specific date ranges, counts, and source limitations, so you can see what the search covered.

Example requests

  • “Find up to 20 conversations about this topic in the saved Slack archive.”
  • “Review messages from the past seven days.”
  • “Check the archive's freshness and sync it if it is outdated.”

Notes

The slacrawl command is required. API syncing and retrieval to complete thread or direct-message content require Slack tokens. Syncing through MCP uses a configured connector. Full syncing to import a broad historical archive is reserved for deliberate requests.

This overview was written by AI (OpenAI Codex) from the public SKILL.md. Check the original below for the exact behavior.

Objective evaluation

AI rated this skill on four points using only the contents of its SKILL.md. Stars and popularity are not taken into account.

Clear instructionsIs it clear when to use it and what it does?
AGoodIt explicitly covers local Slack searches, freshness checks, syncing, and message counts.
Concrete stepsAre steps, inputs, outputs, and examples spelled out?
AGoodIt provides commands for freshness checks, syncing, searches, and SQL, plus required reporting fields.
SafetyAre sending data, deleting files, and running commands disclosed?
AGoodSyncing is limited to stale data or requests; full backfills must be deliberate, and SQL must be read-only.
Easy setupDoes it need few tools or API keys, and are they documented?
AGoodIt includes slacrawl installation metadata and explains when Slack tokens or a configured connector are required.

The total counts each point as A = 25, B = 15, C = 5. Rated by AI (OpenAI Codex) as of Oct 19, 2026. Treat it as a guide and read the original before installing.

Slacrawl

Use local Slack archive data first. Check freshness for recent/current questions:

slacrawl doctor
slacrawl status --json

Refresh only when stale or asked:

slacrawl sync --source wiretap
slacrawl sync --source bot --latest-only

wiretap reads Slack Desktop cache; bot uses API tokens. The desktop/api aliases remain valid. A configured connector can use --source mcp; select the workspace explicitly when needed. Use --full only for deliberate backfills.

Query with bounded slices:

slacrawl search --limit 20 "query"
slacrawl messages --since 7d --limit 50
slacrawl sql "select count(*) from messages;"

Report workspace/channel names, absolute date spans, counts, and token/source limits. Use read-only SQL for exact counts/rankings. API sync and full thread/DM hydration require Slack tokens; do not assume they exist.
