Good for

  • Get the main points of an article from its URL
  • Summarize a YouTube video
  • Extract an available YouTube transcript
  • Create a summary of a PDF or local file

Overview

What it does

Extracts content from article URLs, YouTube videos, podcasts, PDFs, and local files, then summarizes the main points. It uses the summarize command-line tool and lets you specify summary length or the number of output tokens. It also supports returning extracted content without summarizing it and producing JSON for further processing.

When it helps

Use it to get an overview of a long article or document before reading closely, or to review video content as text. For YouTube, you can choose between a summary and transcript extraction. When a transcript is long, the guidance starts with a short summary, followed by closer reading of the sections you need.

Example requests

  • “Give me a short summary of the article at this URL.”
  • “Extract the transcript from this YouTube video.”
  • “Summarize the main points of this PDF and return JSON.”

Notes

Requires installing summarize. Summarization requires an API key for your chosen provider; configuration is shown for OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and Google. YouTube transcript extraction is limited to what can be retrieved. If you use Firecrawl or Apify as supplementary retrieval services, configure their respective key or token.

This overview was written by AI (OpenAI Codex) from the public SKILL.md. Check the original below for the exact behavior.

Objective evaluation

AGoodIt identifies when to summarize URLs or files and when to extract YouTube transcripts.
Concrete stepsAre steps, inputs, outputs, and examples spelled out?
AGoodIt provides input examples and command arguments for length, extraction, and JSON output.
SafetyAre sending data, deleting files, and running commands disclosed?
BPartly lackingIt uses external providers and supplementary services, but does not specify how to check content being sent.
Easy setupDoes it need few tools or API keys, and are they documented?
AGoodIt provides brew installation details, provider-specific API key names, and optional service settings.

The total counts each point as A = 25, B = 15, C = 5. Rated by AI (OpenAI Codex) as of Oct 19, 2026. Treat it as a guide and read the original before installing.

Summarize

Fast CLI to summarize URLs, local files, and YouTube links.

When to use (trigger phrases)

Use this skill immediately when the user asks any of:

  • "use summarize.sh"
  • "what's this link/video about?"
  • "summarize this URL/article"
  • "transcribe this YouTube/video" (best-effort transcript extraction; no yt-dlp needed)

Quick start

summarize "https://example.com"
summarize "/path/to/file.pdf"
summarize "https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ" --youtube auto

YouTube: summary vs transcript

Best-effort transcript (URLs only):

summarize "https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ" --youtube auto --extract

If the user asked for a transcript but it's huge, return a tight summary first, then ask which section/time range to expand.

Model + keys

Set the API key for your chosen provider:

  • OpenAI: OPENAI_API_KEY
  • Anthropic: ANTHROPIC_API_KEY
  • xAI: XAI_API_KEY
  • Google: GEMINI_API_KEY (aliases: GOOGLE_GENERATIVE_AI_API_KEY, GOOGLE_API_KEY)

Default model is auto; config may choose the provider/model.

Useful flags

  • --length short|medium|long|xl|xxl|<chars>
  • --max-output-tokens <count>
  • --extract (print extracted content, no LLM summary)
  • --json (machine readable)
  • --firecrawl auto|off|always (fallback extraction)
  • --youtube auto (Apify fallback if APIFY_API_TOKEN set)

Config

Optional config file: ~/.summarize/config.json

{ "model": "openai/gpt-5.2" }

Optional services:

  • FIRECRAWL_API_KEY for blocked sites
  • APIFY_API_TOKEN for YouTube fallback
