tmux

Inspect and control interactive command-line programs running in tmux, a terminal session manager. List sessions and panes, capture current output or history, send text and special keys, and watch for prompts or completion markers.

OriginalShow the original description

Control tmux sessions/panes for interactive CLIs: list, capture output, send keys, paste text, monitor prompts.

AI rating100/ 100See how to install

Good for

  • Inspect output from an interactive terminal program
  • Send text or special keys to a running session
  • Monitor input prompts and command completion
  • Find sessions and check their panes

Overview

What it does

This skill lets an agent inspect and control interactive command-line programs running in tmux. It lists sessions, windows, and panes, which are split terminal views. You can retrieve the current display or earlier output, paste text, and send keys such as Enter and Ctrl+C. It also handles creating, renaming, and ending sessions.

When it helps

Use it to check whether a running program is waiting for input or to send instructions to an existing terminal session. A helper script can wait until specified text appears in the output, making it useful for watching confirmation prompts or checking whether processing has finished.

Example requests

  • “List the running sessions and panes.”
  • “Check the output history of shared:0.0.”
  • “Type Please continue into the target pane, then send Enter.”

Notes

You need macOS or Linux and the tmux command. The main use is working with existing interactive sessions. The text-waiting helper also matches displayed input and earlier output, so use a unique marker when checking completion. Read and understand a prompt before entering an approval or selection.

This overview was written by AI (OpenAI Codex) from the public SKILL.md. Check the original below for the exact behavior.

Objective evaluation

AI rated this skill on four points using only the contents of its SKILL.md. Stars and popularity are not taken into account.

Clear instructionsIs it clear when to use it and what it does?
AGoodThe source targets existing interactive sessions and explicitly describes listing, capturing output, and sending input.
Concrete stepsAre steps, inputs, outputs, and examples spelled out?
AGoodExamples cover target syntax, key sending, history capture, and commands using a unique completion marker.
SafetyAre sending data, deleting files, and running commands disclosed?
AGoodApproval requires understanding the prompt, and procedures address unintended input and false completion matches.
Easy setupDoes it need few tools or API keys, and are they documented?
AGoodThe source specifies macOS or Linux and tmux requirements and provides a brew installation method.

The total counts each point as A = 25, B = 15, C = 5. Rated by AI (OpenAI Codex) as of Oct 19, 2026. Treat it as a guide and read the original before installing.

SKILL.md (original)

Review the instructions the agent will receive before you install.

tmux

Use for existing interactive tmux sessions. For one-shot commands, use normal shell. For new non-interactive background jobs, use background execution.

Basics

tmux ls
tmux list-windows -t shared
tmux list-panes -t shared:0
tmux capture-pane -t shared:0.0 -p
tmux capture-pane -t shared:0.0 -p -S -

Target format: session:window.pane, e.g. shared:0.0.

Send input

Literal text, then Enter:

tmux send-keys -t shared:0.0 -l -- "Please continue"
tmux send-keys -t shared:0.0 Enter

Special keys:

tmux send-keys -t shared:0.0 C-c
tmux send-keys -t shared:0.0 C-d
tmux send-keys -t shared:0.0 Escape

Use -l -- for arbitrary text. Split text and Enter to avoid paste/newline surprises.

Sessions

tmux new-session -d -s worker
tmux rename-session -t old new
tmux kill-session -t worker

Prompt checks

tmux capture-pane -t worker-3 -p | tail -20
tmux capture-pane -t worker-3 -p | rg "proceed|permission|Yes|No|❯"

Approve/select only when the prompt is understood:

tmux send-keys -t worker-3 -l -- "y"
tmux send-keys -t worker-3 Enter

Helpers

  • scripts/find-sessions.sh: discover sessions.
  • scripts/wait-for-text.sh: wait until captured pane contents contain text.

wait-for-text.sh searches echoed input and scrollback as well as process output. For command completion, use a unique marker whose full text is split across arguments in the command sent to tmux:

nonce="$(od -An -N8 -tx1 /dev/urandom | tr -d ' \n')"
marker="OPENCLAW_DONE_${nonce}"
tmux send-keys -t shared:0.0 -l -- "sleep 4; printf '%s%s\n' 'OPENCLAW_DONE_' '$nonce'"
tmux send-keys -t shared:0.0 Enter
scripts/wait-for-text.sh -t shared:0.0 -p "$marker" -F -T 30

The echoed command never contains the complete marker, and the nonce prevents an older completion line from matching.

Notes

  • capture-pane -p prints to stdout for scripts.
  • -S - captures full scrollback.
  • tmux sessions persist across SSH disconnects.
