xurl

Work with X through authenticated commands for posting, replying, searching, direct messages, and media uploads. Read posts, inspect followers and authentication status, or call v2 API endpoints directly when a shortcut command does not cover the task.

OriginalShow the original description

xurl CLI for authenticated X posts, replies, reads/search, DMs, media upload, followers, auth status, or raw v2 API calls.

AI rating80/ 100See how to install

Good for

  • Publish a post with an image or video
  • Search posts and read mentions
  • Send and read direct messages
  • Check followers and authentication status

Overview

What it does

Use the xurl command-line tool to publish content and retrieve information from X. It supports posts, replies, quotes, deletion, post searches and reading, timelines, mentions, and follower checks. You can also send and receive direct messages, upload images and videos, and manage likes, bookmarks, and follows. For tasks without a dedicated command, it calls the X v2 API directly.

When it helps

Use it to ask an agent to post or reply, retrieve search results, or check mentions. Successful results return as JSON, so retrieved information can feed into later processing. Examples also show how to choose an app or authentication method for each request.

Example requests

  • “Upload this image and post it on X with a caption.”
  • “Find 20 posts matching these keywords.”
  • “Check recent direct messages and authentication status.”

Notes

You need xurl and X API authentication. Enter secrets through authentication prompts rather than directly in commands. --verbose prints authentication headers. Wait when API rate limits are reached. Videos may require a processing-status check before posting.

This overview was written by AI (OpenAI Codex) from the public SKILL.md. Check the original below for the exact behavior.

Objective evaluation

AI rated this skill on four points using only the contents of its SKILL.md. Stars and popularity are not taken into account.

Clear instructionsIs it clear when to use it and what it does?
AGoodThe material names X posting, search, and direct-message tasks and lists their corresponding commands.
Concrete stepsAre steps, inputs, outputs, and examples spelled out?
AGoodIt provides posting and media command examples, specifies JSON output, and explains error responses.
SafetyAre sending data, deleting files, and running commands disclosed?
BPartly lackingSecret handling is explained, but no confirmation procedure is specified before posting or deletion.
Easy setupDoes it need few tools or API keys, and are they documented?
BPartly lackingInstallation methods are listed, but detailed steps for setting up X API authentication are absent.

The total counts each point as A = 25, B = 15, C = 5. Rated by AI (OpenAI Codex) as of Oct 19, 2026. Treat it as a guide and read the original before installing.

xurl

Use xurl for X API work. Shortcut commands return JSON; raw mode works for any v2 endpoint.

Auth

  • ~/.xurl holds tokens; check auth with xurl auth status instead of reading it.
  • Pass secrets to auth commands through the prompt, not inline, so they stay out of shell history.
  • --verbose prints auth headers into tool output.

Common shortcuts

xurl post "Hello world!"
xurl reply POST_ID "Nice."
xurl quote POST_ID "My take"
xurl delete POST_ID
xurl read POST_ID
xurl search "query" -n 20
xurl whoami
xurl user @handle
xurl timeline -n 20
xurl mentions -n 10
xurl like POST_ID
xurl unlike POST_ID
xurl repost POST_ID
xurl unrepost POST_ID
xurl bookmark POST_ID
xurl unbookmark POST_ID
xurl followers -n 20
xurl following -n 20
xurl follow @handle
xurl unfollow @handle
xurl block @handle
xurl unblock @handle
xurl mute @handle
xurl unmute @handle
xurl dm @handle "message"
xurl dms -n 10

POST_ID can be a full https://x.com/<user>/status/<id> URL.

Media

xurl media upload image.jpg
xurl media upload clip.mp4
xurl media status MEDIA_ID
xurl post "caption" --media-id MEDIA_ID

Videos may need processing; poll media status.

Auth/app management

xurl auth status
xurl auth apps list
xurl auth default
xurl auth default APP_NAME USERNAME
xurl auth apps remove APP_NAME

Per request:

xurl --app APP_NAME /2/users/me
xurl --auth oauth2 /2/users/me

Raw API

xurl /2/users/me
xurl -X POST /2/tweets -d '{"text":"Hello world!"}'
xurl '/2/tweets/search/recent?query=openclaw&max_results=10'

Use raw mode when shortcuts do not cover the endpoint. Keep payloads in temp files for complex JSON.

Output and errors

  • JSON stdout on success.
  • Non-zero exit on API/auth/network errors.
  • 401/403: auth, scope, or app mismatch; check xurl auth status.
  • 429: rate limited; back off.
  • Media upload failures: check file type/size and media processing status.
