search-tools

Guides code searches by choosing tools for meaning, syntax structure, or literal text. Uses LEANN for conceptual questions, AST-grep for code patterns, Morph for text searches, and built-in Grep for simple queries or when Morph credentials are unavailable.

Good for

  • Find code that implements authentication or caching
  • Locate function calls and component usage patterns
  • Search source files for text or TODO comments
  • Choose a search tool based on available setup

Search Tool Hierarchy

When searching code, use this decision tree:

Decision Tree

Need CONCEPTUAL/SEMANTIC search?
(how does X work, find patterns, understand architecture)
  → Use LEANN (/leann-search) - embedding-based semantic search
→ PreToolUse hook auto-redirects semantic Grep queries

Need to understand code STRUCTURE?
(find function calls, class usages, refactor patterns)
  → Use AST-grep (/ast-grep-find)

Need to find TEXT in code?
  → Use Morph (/morph-search) - 20x faster
→ If no Morph API key: fall back to Grep tool

Simple one-off search?
→ Use built-in Grep tool directly

Tool Comparison

ToolBest ForRequires
LEANNSemantic search: "how does caching work", "error handling patterns", conceptual queriesIndex built
AST-grepStructural patterns: "find all calls to foo()", refactoring, find usages by typeMCP server
MorphFast text search: "find files mentioning error", grep across codebaseAPI key
GrepLiteral patterns, class/function names, regexNothing (built-in)

Examples

LEANN (semantic/conceptual):

  • "how does authentication work"
  • "find error handling patterns"
  • "where is rate limiting implemented"

AST-grep (structural):

  • "Find all functions that return a Promise"
  • "Find all React components using useState"
  • "Refactor all imports of X to Y"

Morph (text search):

  • "Find all files mentioning 'authentication'"
  • "Search for TODO comments"

Grep (literal):

  • class ProviderAdapter
  • def __init__
  • Regex patterns

LEANN Commands

# Search with semantic query
leann search opc-dev "how does blackboard communication work" --top-k 5

# List available indexes
leann list

# Rebuild index (when code changes)
leann build opc-dev --docs dir1 dir2 --no-recompute --no-compact --force

Coordinate background agents through saved files, keeping lengthy work transcripts out of the main conversation. It defines how to pass results between agents, monitor progress, and verify completed work with tests.

  • Keeping long agent transcripts out of the main conversation
  • Passing research and plans between agents through files
  • Checking for stalled background agents

Delegate implementation, file reading, and testing to separate agents, then bring concise summaries back to the main conversation. The rules explain when delegation helps and when a small edit is better handled directly.

  • Implementing a feature across multiple files
  • Completing a specific phase of an implementation plan
  • Delegating feature development and testing

FreeSummary

Organize implementation work across research, planning, validation, implementation, and review agents. Each stage passes files to the next, while implementation starts with failing tests and the main conversation coordinates the workflow.

  • Dividing implementation work among specialized agents
  • Checking a plan against research before implementation
  • Writing failing tests before implementing changes

Connect Agentica SDK agents to Claude Code CLI through a proxy, an intermediary server. Use setup and debugging guidance to address file permissions, streamed responses, result formatting, and agents reporting success without performing the requested operations.

  • Connecting Agentica agents to Claude Code tools
  • Investigating file write and edit permission errors
  • Debugging streaming and REPL response formats

Consult Agentica APIs when building workflows where multiple AI agents cooperate. This reference covers eleven coordination patterns, agent tracking, shared state, handoffs, and ways to combine results, with pointers to detailed API specifications.

  • Choose a coordination pattern for multiple agents
  • Check pattern constructors and methods
  • Implement custom coordination patterns
