cross-check

Have the agents behind rival answers to one question check each other's answers, then pick on the evidence. Use when independent answers to one question disagree, or would, and no test, file or run can settle which is right.

Review the instructions the agent will receive before you install.

The authors answer blind. No answers yet → ask two or three subagents, each on a different model, the same question with the same files.

Write down the pick you would make from the answers alone.

Send each author the other answers, never its own, by message to the same agent. Ask:

  • per rival: what it gets right that yours misses, and what breaks if it is wrong, each with a file:line, quote or number
  • whether the rivals change your pick, and why

A critique with no evidence goes back to its author once.

Pick on evidence, never on how many authors back an option. Hand back:

  • the pick, in one sentence
  • per option: the fact that decides it, where it lives, who raised it
  • the strongest objection to the pick, who raised it, and whether it held
  • what the critique changed from the pick you wrote down
  • what stays open

The answers agree, or one check settles the question → settle it yourself.

Turn words with two readings into one confirmed ask. Use when the user's words admit two readings that would build different things.

Surfaces what the agent would change and kept to itself — a decision it would make differently, effort it saw wasted, a better route to the goal, a fact the user lacks, friction in the tools, permissions, setup or docs the work ran on. Use when you hold one of these and have not said it.

Plan the skills an ask needs, invoke each as its condition arrives. Use when the ask has multiple aspects that different skills carry, or the user named multiple skills.

Bring how named experts would think about the question. Use when the user wants expert thinking on a tradeoff, choice, or stuck problem — not a verdict.

Hold an ask to the bar a top professional in its field would set — a deeper ask, never a bigger one. Use when an ask is clear but nothing yet names the sources, methods, target, or outside check the work will meet.
