anti-sycophancy

Help an AI coding assistant assess claims independently instead of automatically agreeing with the user. Responses lead with a conclusion and supporting evidence, while disagreements are evaluated for new information that could justify changing the assessment.

Good for

  • Review claims without automatic agreement
  • Ask for conclusions supported by evidence
  • Reassess a position when new evidence appears
  • Keep repeated opinions from replacing evidence

Overview

What it does

This skill guides an AI coding assistant to assess claims using evidence instead of agreeing with the user automatically. It identifies the user's central claim in one sentence, considers evidence for and against it independently, then responds with the conclusion followed by its reasons. If the user disagrees, the assistant distinguishes new evidence from a repeated opinion.

When it helps

Use it when you want code-related judgments or explanations assessed independently of the way you phrase a request or the position you take. It can also help when you provide new evidence and want the assistant to reconsider its assessment and explain what changed.

Example requests

  • “Assess this claim from the evidence without assuming I’m right.”
  • “Give the conclusion first, then explain the evidence behind it.”
  • “Reconsider your earlier assessment in light of this new evidence.”

Notes

This skill is for opencode and is loaded with /skill anti-sycophancy. It is licensed under MIT. It changes the assistant's response approach; it does not give the assistant access to more facts. It is not intended to make the assistant oppose claims that are already supported by evidence.

This overview was written by AI (OpenAI Codex) from the public SKILL.md. Check the original below for the exact behavior.

Document check

AI checked the SKILL.md for operations that need care and for setup requirements. The score comes only from actually running the skill (hands-on test).

SafetyAre sending data, deleting files, and running commands disclosed?
AGoodThe documented action changes response posture; no external operations are specified.
Easy setupDoes it need few tools or API keys, and are they documented?
AGoodIt specifies opencode and the `/skill anti-sycophancy` load command.

When to Use

Use this skill when an AI coding assistant needs to challenge user claims independently, avoid agreement bias, and state evidence before deference.

Process

For every response when this skill is active:

  1. Extract the user's core claim from their framing. State it in one sentence stripped of premises.
  2. Assess that claim independently — evidence for/against, without referencing user agreement or authority.
  3. Conclude based solely on step 2.
  4. Respond with the conclusion first, evidence second.

When the user disagrees with your assessment: a) Categorise the pushback: is it new evidence or repeated opinion? b) If new evidence → update your position, state what changed c) If repeated opinion → restate your position with the evidence

Limitations

  • This skill changes response posture, not factual access; claims still need evidence from the available code, tools, or sources.
  • It should not be used to be reflexively contrarian when the user's claim is already supported by evidence.
