focus-not-obscured

Check whether sticky headers, banners, or chat widgets hide controls reached with the keyboard. Review tab order, zoomed views, and mobile layouts, then suggest spacing or scrolling changes that keep the focused control and its indicator visible.

OriginalShow the original description

Use when reviewing sticky navigation, consent banners, chat widgets, skip links, or any fixed-position UI. Validate the actual tab order and viewport behavior at realistic zoom levels.

Good for

  • Checking keyboard navigation around sticky headers
  • Testing pages with cookie banners and chat widgets open
  • Reviewing overlap in zoomed and mobile layouts
  • Adjusting spacing to keep focused controls visible

Overview

What it does

Checks whether buttons and input fields reached with the keyboard are hidden behind sticky headers, footers, banners, or other overlays. It checks that the control itself is visible, as well as the focus outline that marks the current selection. Findings identify the affected selectors, screen widths, and display states. Suggested fixes include adding space with scroll-padding, reducing the height of overlapping areas, and changing scrolling behavior.

When it helps

Use it on pages with sticky navigation, Cookie consent banners, or chat widgets. It also covers overlaps in zoomed views and mobile layouts that may be difficult to notice at the usual display size. With banners open, it helps check the actual Tab sequence and whether each control stays within the visible area.

Example requests

  • “Tab through this page with its sticky header and find controls that become hidden.”
  • “Check zoomed and mobile layouts with the Cookie banner and chat open.”
  • “Suggest spacing and scrolling changes that keep hidden input fields visible.”

This overview was written by AI (OpenAI Codex) from the public SKILL.md. Check the original below for the exact behavior.

Objective evaluation

AI rated this skill on four points using only the contents of its SKILL.md. Stars and popularity are not taken into account.

Clear instructionsIs it clear when to use it and what it does?
AGoodIt identifies focused controls hidden by fixed UI and specifies checking them through keyboard navigation.
Concrete stepsAre steps, inputs, outputs, and examples spelled out?
AGoodIt specifies testing with banners open and zoom enabled, spacing fixes, and reporting exact selectors, breakpoints, and UI states.
SafetyAre sending data, deleting files, and running commands disclosed?
AGoodThe scope covers inspection and layout or scrolling fixes; it does not instruct external transmission or deletion.
Easy setupDoes it need few tools or API keys, and are they documented?
AGoodChecks center on Tab navigation and zoomed layouts, with no dedicated tools or API keys specified.

The total counts each point as A = 25, B = 15, C = 5. Rated by AI (OpenAI Codex) as of Oct 23, 2026. Treat it as a guide and read the original before installing.

Keep focused elements unobscured

A visible focus ring is not enough if the focused element sits behind a sticky header or footer. Keyboard users need to see the actual focused control and the focus indicator at the same time in order to continue the task.

Quick Reference

  • Sticky UI must not cover the focused control while keyboard users tab through the page
  • Use scroll-padding or equivalent spacing when fixed headers or footers are present
  • Test with cookie banners, chat widgets, and consent bars open
  • Re-test at zoomed and mobile layouts where overlap problems usually appear

Check

Audit keyboard focus with all sticky UI active. Check headers, footers, cookie banners, promo bars, and chat launchers for cases where the focused element scrolls underneath them.

Fix

Add layout spacing such as scroll-padding, reduce overlay height, or change focus/scroll behavior so the focused element remains visible when tabbing.

Explain

Explain WCAG Focus Not Obscured, why fixed-position UI commonly breaks it, and how scroll-padding and overlay layout choices prevent the issue.

Code Review

Review sticky layout, focus styles, overlays, and keyboard navigation related to Keep focused elements unobscured. Flag exact selectors, breakpoints, or UI states where focused controls can be covered.
