meta-in-body

Inspect page HTML for metadata tags placed outside the head section, where page settings belong. Identify misplaced tags and guide fixes to templates or scripts that insert them into the body.

OriginalShow the original description

Use when auditing HTML document structure. Applies to any page where meta tags (noindex, canonical-url, description, viewport, OG tags) may have been injected into the body by CMS plugins, widgets, or JavaScript rendering.

Good for

  • Checking metadata placement after CMS plugin changes
  • Finding metadata inserted into the body by JavaScript
  • Reviewing robots, description, OG, and canonical placement
  • Checking HTML structure before moving tags into head

Overview

What it does

This skill examines HTML to check whether metadata tags, which describe page settings, appear outside <head>. It identifies tags inside <body> or after </head> by their name or property values. The review covers robots, description, and og:*, as well as the placement of link rel='canonical'. When tags are misplaced, it helps move them into <head> or correct the code that inserts them.

When it helps

Use it after adding CMS plugins or widgets to check where metadata appears. It also helps investigate pages that add tags through JavaScript or verify whether settings intended for search engines appear in the expected part of the document.

Example requests

  • “Inspect the rendered HTML and list metadata tags inside the body.”
  • “Check the placement of robots, description, OG tags, and canonical.”
  • “Update the metadata insertion script to target document.head.”

Notes

The review requires rendered HTML and the DOM, the element structure interpreted by the browser. It includes checking parent elements and validating with an HTML validator. Reading the original template alone does not complete the check.

This overview was written by AI (OpenAI Codex) from the public SKILL.md. Check the original below for the exact behavior.

AI checked the SKILL.md for operations that need care and for setup requirements. The score comes only from actually running the skill (hands-on test).

AGoodChanges target tag placement and insertion code; no external transmission, deletion, or credential handling is instructed.
Easy setupDoes it need few tools or API keys, and are they documented?
AGoodIt calls for DOM inspection or HTML validation without requiring a specific paid service or API key.

Meta Tags in Body

Meta tags placed in the document body are ignored by search engines and most browsers—directives like noindex or canonical-url are silently ineffective, causing pages to be indexed or de-indexed unexpectedly.

Quick Reference

  • All <meta> tags must appear inside <head>, never inside <body>
  • Browsers may ignore or move misplaced meta tags, making them ineffective
  • Crawlers like Googlebot only process meta tags found in <head>
  • Validate with HTML validator or inspect parsed DOM to confirm placement

Check

Parse the HTML and check whether any <meta> elements appear outside <head>—i.e., inside <body> or after the </head> closing tag. Flag each misplaced tag by name/property.

Fix

Move all <meta> tags into the <head> section before </head>. If they are injected by a script after the DOM is built, refactor the injection to target document.head instead of document.body.

Explain

Meta tags are document-level metadata and must live in <head>. When placed in <body>, they fall outside the metadata model of the document—search engines and browsers do not honour them, so directives like noindex or canonical-url will have no effect.

Code Review

Parse the rendered HTML and check the DOM structure. Find all <meta> elements. For each one, traverse up the parent chain — if any ancestor is <body> or if the element appears after </head> in the source, flag it. Pay special attention to: meta name='robots', meta name='description', meta property='og:*', and link rel='canonical' placed in body.
