Good for

  • Auditing inconsistent CSS class names
  • Renaming component classes using BEM
  • Separating utility classes and JavaScript hooks
  • Checking styles across screen sizes and states

Overview

What it does

This skill reviews CSS class names to identify unclear names and inconsistent naming rules. It organizes them with BEM: Block for a component, Element for a part within it, and Modifier for a state or variation. Names are revised to follow Block, Block__Element, and Block--Modifier. It also covers naming that separates shared utility styles and classes referenced by JavaScript from component styles.

When it helps

Use it when a name such as .active does not explain its purpose, or when existing styles have become difficult to find. It helps review naming across stylesheets and components to prevent unintended style conflicts. Working through a real component also makes it suitable for learning how to apply BEM.

Example requests

  • “Find unclear class names and mixed naming conventions in this CSS.”
  • “Organize this component's class names using BEM.”
  • “Explain how to name utility classes and classes used by JavaScript separately.”

Notes

The naming policy uses kebab-case for class names. Before proposing changes, the review assumes checking the rendered interface across breakpoints and interaction states.

This overview was written by AI (OpenAI Codex) from the public SKILL.md. Check the original below for the exact behavior.

Objective evaluation

AI rated this skill on four points using only the contents of its SKILL.md. Stars and popularity are not taken into account.

Clear instructionsIs it clear when to use it and what it does?
AGoodIt explicitly targets class-name reviews in stylesheets and components, with BEM as the proposed naming format.
Concrete stepsAre steps, inputs, outputs, and examples spelled out?
AGoodIt specifies naming checks, BEM renaming patterns, kebab-case, and separate naming for utility classes and JavaScript hooks.
SafetyAre sending data, deleting files, and running commands disclosed?
AGoodChanges center on class names; there are no instructions to transmit data externally or read credentials.
Easy setupDoes it need few tools or API keys, and are they documented?
AGoodIt calls for inspecting CSS and rendered layouts, with no dedicated tools or API keys specified.

The total counts each point as A = 25, B = 15, C = 5. Rated by AI (OpenAI Codex) as of Oct 23, 2026. Treat it as a guide and read the original before installing.

Use consistent CSS naming conventions

Without a naming convention, class names become a guessing game — does .active mean the nav item is active, the button is pressed, or a form field has focus? With BEM or a similar methodology, .button--active is unambiguous. This reduces the time spent searching for existing styles and prevents accidental style conflicts.

Quick Reference

  • BEM (Block__Element--Modifier) is the most widely adopted naming convention
  • Consistent naming lets you understand a class's purpose without reading its styles
  • Namespace utility classes and JS hooks separately from component styles
  • Use kebab-case for class names (not camelCase or snake_case)

Check

Audit the class names in this CSS file. Are they consistently named? Do they follow a clear convention? Are there any ambiguous names that could conflict?

Fix

Rename classes to follow BEM methodology: Block, Block__Element, Block--Modifier pattern.

Explain

Explain BEM naming convention, why naming conventions matter, and how to apply BEM to a real component.

Code Review
