nofollow-internal

Scan links within the same domain for the nofollow attribute, a setting used to qualify links for search engines. List affected pages, link text, and destinations, then guide removal or changes based on the intended purpose.

OriginalShow the original description

Use when auditing internal link structure or reviewing link attributes. Applies to any site using rel=nofollow on links pointing to pages within the same domain.

AI rating90/ 100See how to install

Good for

  • Auditing nofollow attributes on internal links
  • Reviewing links in navigation, headers, and footers
  • Finding nofollow applied broadly by templates
  • Separating indexing controls from crawling controls

Overview

What it does

This skill checks links to pages on the same domain and identifies those whose rel attribute contains nofollow. It lists the source page, link text, and destination URL for each instance, then helps remove the attribute from internal links. The review checks whether links appear in navigation, headers, footers, or body content, including cases where nofollow appears alongside other attribute values.

When it helps

Use it when reviewing your site's internal link structure or checking whether a template has applied nofollow to every link. It also helps clarify the purpose of a setting: keeping a page out of search results or restricting search engine crawling.

Example requests

  • “Find links to the same domain that contain nofollow, and list their source pages and destinations.”
  • “Review the attributes on internal links in the header and footer.”
  • “Suggest setting changes that distinguish search indexing controls from crawling controls.”

Notes

Links are classified by checking whether their destinations share the same domain. The source distinguishes noindex on the destination page for avoiding search listings from Disallow in robots.txt for restricting crawling.

Objective evaluation

AI rated this skill on four points using only the contents of its SKILL.md. Stars and popularity are not taken into account.

Clear instructionsIs it clear when to use it and what it does?
AGoodIt explicitly targets detecting nofollow on same-domain links and reviewing those attributes.
Concrete stepsAre steps, inputs, outputs, and examples spelled out?
AGoodIt specifies inspecting rel, checking domain matches, and listing source pages, link text, and destination URLs.
SafetyAre sending data, deleting files, and running commands disclosed?
BPartly lackingIt proposes noindex and robots.txt changes but does not specify confirmation steps before applying them.
Easy setupDoes it need few tools or API keys, and are they documented?
AGoodThe work centers on inspecting link attributes and domains, with no dedicated tools or API keys specified.

The total counts each point as A = 25, B = 15, C = 5. Rated by AI (OpenAI Codex) as of Oct 23, 2026. Treat it as a guide and read the original before installing.

Avoid nofollow on internal links

Adding rel=nofollow to internal links prevents PageRank from flowing to those pages—reducing their ability to rank—while providing no benefit over simply omitting the attribute.

Quick Reference

  • rel=nofollow on internal links blocks PageRank flow to your own pages
  • Internal nofollow was once used for 'PageRank sculpting' but is no longer effective
  • Use nofollow only on outbound links to untrusted or sponsored content
  • If you don't want a page crawled or indexed, use noindex on the target page instead

Check

Scan all internal links (<a href> tags pointing to the same domain) for the presence of rel='nofollow' or rel containing 'nofollow'. List each instance with its source page, anchor text, and target URL.

Fix

Remove rel='nofollow' from internal links. If the goal was to prevent indexing of the target page, add <meta name='robots' content='noindex'> to the target page instead. If the goal was to prevent crawling, use robots.txt Disallow for that path.

Explain

The rel=nofollow attribute was originally designed for untrusted external links. When applied to internal links, it blocks PageRank from flowing to your own pages without any benefit. Google has stated that PageRank sculpting via nofollow does not work—the PageRank that would have passed is simply lost, not redistributed.

Code Review

Query all <a href='...'> elements. For each link, check if rel contains 'nofollow'. Determine if the link is internal (same domain) or external. Flag every internal link with rel='nofollow'. Check if the flagged links are in navigation, header, footer, or body content. Look for rel='nofollow new-tab' patterns that may have been applied blanket to all links.
