Overview

DeepInfra offers serverless GPU inference for a broad catalog of open models at straightforward, competitive pricing. The positioning is value: wide model selection, simple pay-per-use pricing, and no infrastructure management. It's the "good, cheap, and easy" option in the inference-provider landscape — particularly attractive for cost-sensitive workloads, experimentation across many models, and teams that want one simple API for open-model inference.

DeepInfra doesn't chase the extreme-speed crown or the enterprise-deployment niche; it competes on price-to-performance and simplicity. For many workloads — batch processing, prototypes, cost-sensitive production — that's exactly the right tradeoff.

The evaluation is refreshingly simple: does a model you need run correctly at a price and latency you accept? DeepInfra usually answers yes at low cost.

When to use

  • Cost-sensitive inference: batch jobs, high-volume processing, tight budgets.
  • Experimenting across many open models cheaply (evaluation, prototyping).
  • Simple serverless inference without enterprise or extreme-speed requirements.
  • Batch/offline workloads where latency is flexible and price dominates.
  • Prototypes and side projects needing real inference at minimal cost.
  • Multi-model products where per-model cost differences compound.

Core concepts

  • Serverless inference: pay-per-use API, no provisioning. The standard model — evaluate quality and latency, then scale usage.
  • Broad model catalog: extensive open-model coverage (LLMs, embeddings, vision, image generation). Check availability for the specific models and versions you need.
  • Straightforward pricing: simple per-token pricing, typically among the lowest for serverless inference. Model your expected spend at projected volume.
  • Value positioning: the tradeoff is price/performance over peak speed or enterprise features. Know what you're optimizing for.
  • API compatibility: OpenAI-compatible endpoints for easy integration and migration. Swapping providers for comparison is cheap — do it.
  • Batch-friendly economics: low per-token prices make large batch jobs (dataset processing, evals, backfills) economical.
  • Rate limits: understand limits per model and account tier; production traffic needs headroom.
  • Reliability: uptime and consistency matter as much as price. Track error rates and latency stability on your workload.

Practical workflow

  1. Shortlist models on price/performance. Identify candidate models; compare DeepInfra pricing against alternatives for your expected volume.
  2. Validate quality. Run your eval set — cheap inference of inadequate quality is no bargain. Quality bar first, as always.
  3. Measure latency on your workload. Value providers may have higher or more variable latency than speed specialists. Verify against your requirements (batch: fine; real-time: measure carefully).
  4. Load-test at expected volume. Confirm rate limits and latency stability at your production concurrency, not just in dev.
  5. Model total cost. Project monthly spend at expected (and 2× expected) volume. Compare against alternatives on cost per completed task.
  6. Set up monitoring. Track cost, latency, and error rates. Cheap providers still need operational visibility.
  7. Keep provider optionality. The value tier is competitive and churns — maintain the ability to switch providers without rewriting integration.

Checklist for DeepInfra in production:

  • Model quality validated on your eval set.
  • Latency measured against your requirements.
  • Rate limits confirmed for production volume.
  • Monthly cost projected (including 2× headroom).
  • Cost/latency/error monitoring in place.

Common pitfalls

  • Price-only decisions. Choosing the cheapest option without validating quality and latency on your workload. Value means price/performance, not just price.
  • Latency surprises. Assuming value-tier latency matches speed-tier latency. For batch work it doesn't matter; for interactive work, measure.
  • No rate-limit planning. Hitting limits at production launch because dev testing never approached them. Load-test at real volume.
  • Ignoring reliability. Rock-bottom pricing with poor uptime is expensive in incident costs. Track error rates and availability.
  • Model version drift. Catalog models update; re-validate quality when versions change, especially on pinned production paths.
  • Cost projections without headroom. Modeling exactly expected volume with no buffer. Traffic spikes happen — project 2× and set alerts.
  • Provider lock-in by accident. Deep integration with provider-specific quirks. Keep the OpenAI-compatible surface as your abstraction.
  • Skipping the comparison. The value tier moves fast — re-compare price/performance periodically; today's bargain isn't always tomorrow's.
