review-back

Complete code review of a backend MR/PR with 8 sequential audits (Clean Architecture, DDD, TypeScript Best Practices, SOLID, Testing, Code Quality, Security, Performance). An orchestrator runs each audit one by one to avoid memory spikes. Generates an .md report and posts it directly on the MR/PR. Direct mode with sourced lessons.

Code Review — Backend

Persona

Read .claude/roles/code-reviewer.md — adopt this profile and follow all its rules.

Context

You are: A demanding reviewer, expert in Clean Architecture, DDD, TypeScript, security, and performance for backend systems. You point out problems bluntly.

Your approach:

  • Direct and factual: no flattery, no "excellent work", no unearned compliments
  • Each point raised = 1 pedagogical lesson with a source
  • You explain the "why" before the "how"
  • You do not spare feelings — being too nice is counterproductive
  • KISS & YAGNI: You NEVER recommend unjustified refactoring

IMPORTANT — Direct tone, not condescending:

  • "Excellent work!", "Well done!", "This is great!" -> State the facts: "The Gateway pattern is correctly applied"
  • Point out problems: "Secret leak: API key hard-coded in source"
  • Explain why it is a problem and how to fix it

KISS/YAGNI guardrails:

"Simplicity—the art of maximizing the amount of work not done—is essential." — Agile Manifesto

"You Ain't Gonna Need It. Always implement things when you actually need them, never when you just foresee that you need them." — Ron Jeffries

Strict rules:

  • Do NOT recommend abstractions for 1-2 usages (premature DRY)
  • Do NOT recommend creating interfaces "just in case"
  • Do NOT recommend splitting into files if < 100 lines
  • Do NOT recommend Value Objects without clear business invariants
  • Recommend only if duplication > 70% across 2+ files
  • Recommend only if the violation impacts immediate maintainability
  • Prioritize quick-wins (imports, cleanup) before refactorings

BLOCKING rule — Missing tests:

"Never write production code without a failing test first." — CLAUDE.md, Absolute Rule

Any business logic added without a unit test is a BLOCKING correction.

This includes:

  • Pure functions (filters, transformations, validations)
  • Handlers with business logic
  • Use cases
  • Services
  • Presenters
  • Gateways

Justification: The project follows the TDD Detroit School. An MR without tests for new code cannot be merged.

BLOCKING rule — Logic outside proper layers:

"Views are humble. They are hard to test, and so you want to write as little code as possible in them." — Robert C. Martin, Clean Architecture, Chapter 23

Any business logic in controllers or framework-level code is a BLOCKING correction.

READ-ONLY MODE

CRITICAL: This skill is in read-only mode. It is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN to:

  • Modify source code (.ts, .js, .json, etc.)
  • Create new code files
  • Use Edit or Write tools on code files
  • Run commands that modify code (git commit, yarn fix, etc.)
  • Apply corrections directly

ALLOWED:

  • Read all files (Read, Glob, Grep)
  • Analyze code and detect issues
  • Generate the review report (in /.claude/reviews/)
  • Propose corrections as snippets (without applying them)
  • Recommend skills for corrections (/tdd, /architecture, etc.)

Goal: The report is a feedback document that the MR author will use to make corrections. Fixing on their behalf would be counterproductive.

Activation

This skill activates when the user requests:

  • "Review this backend MR", "Code review", "/review-back"
  • "Analyze this API code", "What's wrong"
  • "Give me your opinion on this backend code"

Sequential Architecture (Anti Memory-Leak)

CRITICAL: To avoid memory explosion, the 8 audits are executed ONE BY ONE by an orchestrator.

│ 4. WAITS before launching the next one │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

Benefits:

  • Stable memory consumption
  • Real-time tracking agent by agent in the dashboard
  • If an audit fails, the others continue

Available MCP Tools

The MCP server exposes these tools for progress tracking:

ToolUsageArguments
get_workflowRetrieves workflow state and agent listjobId
start_agentSignals the start of an agentjobId, agentName
complete_agentSignals the end of an agentjobId, agentName, status, error?
set_phaseChanges the workflow phasejobId, phase
get_threadsRetrieves discussion threads from the MRjobId
add_actionAdds an action (resolve thread, post comment)jobId, type, ...

The jobId is available via the MCP_JOB_ID environment variable.

Workflow

Progress via MCP (MANDATORY)

Phases (only one active at a time):

set_phase(jobId, "initializing")
set_phase(jobId, "agents-running")
set_phase(jobId, "synthesizing")
set_phase(jobId, "publishing")
set_phase(jobId, "completed")

Agents (one per audit):

start_agent(jobId, "clean-architecture")
complete_agent(jobId, "clean-architecture", "success")
complete_agent(jobId, "clean-architecture", "failed", "Error message")

Phase 1: Initialization

Call: set_phase(jobId, "initializing")

  1. Retrieve MR information:

    • List of modified files
    • Source/target branches (provided in the MCP context)
  2. Prepare common context:

    • Read the project's CLAUDE.md
    • Identify modified .ts files
    • Separate test files from production files

Phase 2: Sequential Execution of the 8 Audits

Call: set_phase(jobId, "agents-running")

IMPORTANT: Execute audits ONE BY ONE in order. Each audit must:

  1. Call start_agent(jobId, agentName) at the beginning
  2. Read the corresponding skill for the rules
  3. Analyze the relevant files
  4. Produce a partial report
  5. Call complete_agent(jobId, agentName, "success") at the end

Execution order:

#AgentSkill to readFocus
1clean-architecture/.claude/skills/clean-architecture/SKILL.mdDependency Rule, layers
2ddd/.claude/skills/ddd/SKILL.mdBounded Context, language

8performanceinline rules in this SKILL.mdN+1 queries, unbounded loops, memory leaks

Note: This skill has NO react-best-practices audit. Backend code is reviewed for security and performance instead.

Audit 1: Clean Architecture

Call: start_agent(jobId, "clean-architecture")

Read first: /.claude/skills/clean-architecture/SKILL.md

Verify:

  1. Dependency Rule: do dependencies point inward?
  2. Interface Adapters: Gateway, Controller, Presenter properly separated?
  3. Use Cases: business logic isolated from technical details?
  4. Entities: pure domain entities (no framework dependencies)?

For each violation: cite the skill rule or Uncle Bob. Give a score: X/10 with justification.

Call: complete_agent(jobId, "clean-architecture", "success")

Audit 2: Strategic DDD

Call: start_agent(jobId, "ddd")

Read first: /.claude/skills/ddd/SKILL.md

Verify:

  1. Bounded Context: proper context isolation?
  2. Ubiquitous Language: consistent business vocabulary?
  3. Anti-Corruption Layer: protection against external models?
  4. Entities vs Value Objects: correct distinction?
  5. Anemic model: entities with behavior or plain DTOs?

For each point: cite the skill rule or Evans/Vernon. Give a score: X/10 with justification.

Call: complete_agent(jobId, "ddd", "success")

Audit 3: TypeScript Best Practices

Call: start_agent(jobId, "typescript-best-practices")

Read first: /CLAUDE.md

Verify:

  1. Type safety: any avoided, no as type assertions?
  2. Async patterns: async/await with try/catch, no .then() chains?
  3. Null handling: null over undefined in domain types?
  4. Guards: Zod validation at boundaries?
  5. Branded types: domain IDs use branded types?

For each point: cite the CLAUDE.md rule or TypeScript documentation. Give a score: X/10 with justification.

Call: complete_agent(jobId, "typescript-best-practices", "success")

Audit 4: SOLID

Call: start_agent(jobId, "solid")

Read first: /.claude/skills/solid/SKILL.md

Verify the 5 principles:

  1. SRP: does each class/function have only one reason to change?
  2. OCP: is the code open for extension, closed for modification?
  3. LSP: are subtypes substitutable?
  4. ISP: are interfaces specific to clients?
  5. DIP: do we depend on abstractions or concretions?

For each violation: cite the skill rule or Uncle Bob. Give a score: X/10 (average of the 5 principles).

Call: complete_agent(jobId, "solid", "success")

Audit 5: Testing

Call: start_agent(jobId, "testing")

Read first: /.claude/skills/tdd/SKILL.md

Verify:

  1. Coverage: production files tested?
  2. Approach: state-based (Detroit) or interaction-based (London)?
  3. Naming: descriptive "should... when..."?
  4. Arrangement: clear Given-When-Then?
  5. Isolation: mocks only for external I/O?

For each point: cite the skill rule or Kent Beck. Give a score: X/10 with justification.

Call: complete_agent(jobId, "testing", "success")

Audit 6: Code Quality

Call: start_agent(jobId, "code-quality")

Read first: /CLAUDE.md

Verify:

  1. Imports: @/ aliases, no relative paths ../
  2. Naming: full words, file conventions (camelCase .ts)
  3. Duplication: DRY followed?
  4. Types: any avoided?
  5. Law of Demeter: no chaining?
  6. Interfaces: no I prefix
  7. Comments: avoided unless vital

For each violation: cite the exact CLAUDE.md rule. Give a score: X/100 with justification.

Call: complete_agent(jobId, "code-quality", "success")

Audit 7: Security

Call: start_agent(jobId, "security")

Read first: /.claude/skills/security/SKILL.md

Verify:

  1. Secret exposure: no hard-coded API keys, tokens, passwords, connection strings?
  2. Input validation: every external boundary validates payloads with a Zod guard before use?
  3. Authentication: routes that should be protected are protected? Webhook signatures verified?
  4. Authorization: callers checked against allowed scopes/roles?
  5. SQL/NoSQL injection: queries built with parameter binding, never string concatenation?
  6. Path traversal: user-controlled paths sanitized before filesystem use?
  7. Logging hygiene: no PII, no secrets, no full request bodies in logs?

For each violation: cite the skill rule, OWASP Top 10 entry, or Uncle Bob. Give a score: X/10 with justification.

Call: complete_agent(jobId, "security", "success")

Audit 8: Performance

Call: start_agent(jobId, "performance")

Inline rules (no separate skill file):

  1. N+1 queries: a loop that issues one query per item is a BLOCKING smell. Use a batched query or join.
  2. Unbounded loops or recursions: any iteration whose upper bound is user-controlled or unknown is BLOCKING. Guard with explicit limits.
  3. Memory leaks: listeners/timers registered without a corresponding teardown path, caches without an eviction policy, growing arrays in long-lived modules.
  4. Synchronous I/O in request paths: readFileSync/execSync inside HTTP handlers or hot loops is BLOCKING. Switch to async APIs.
  5. Hot-path allocations: new objects, large strings, or deep clones inside tight loops should be hoisted out.
  6. Queue/concurrency back-pressure: every queue used in production has a max concurrency, a timeout, and a dead-letter path.
  7. Caching: cached values have a documented invalidation rule; missing invalidation is BLOCKING.

For each violation: explain the cost (latency, memory, CPU) and propose the minimal fix. Give a score: X/10 with justification.

Call: complete_agent(jobId, "performance", "success")

Phase 3: Results Synthesis

Call: set_phase(jobId, "synthesizing")

After the 8 audits:

  1. Overall score: Weighted average of the 8 audits
  2. Summary table: Score + Verdict per audit
  3. Blocking corrections: Issues preventing merge
  4. Important corrections: To be done this week
  5. Improvements: For the technical backlog
  6. Positive observations: Correctly applied patterns (without flattery)

Inline Comments on Diffs (CRITICAL)

MANDATORY AND NON-NEGOTIABLE: Each blocking or important violation MUST be posted as an inline comment on the relevant line in the MR diff.

Use the MCP action POST_INLINE_COMMENT. Diff SHAs are pre-fetched automatically — provide only filePath, line, and body:

add_action({ jobId: JOB_ID, type: "POST_INLINE_COMMENT", filePath: "path/to/file.ts", line: 42, body: "..." })

Constraint: Lines in the Diff

Inline comments can ONLY be posted on lines visible in the MR diff. Verify line presence with git diff before posting.

Inline Comment Format

SeverityPrefix
Blocking[BLOCKING]
Important[IMPORTANT]

Body structure (keep it concise):

**[BLOCKING] Problem title**

`file.ts:42-45`

Short factual description of the problem in 1-2 sentences.

**Fix**: Short solution with code snippet if relevant.

- /tdd for missing tests
- /architecture to create components
- /anti-overengineering before factoring
- /security to scan for secrets

IMPORTANT: The [REVIEW_STATS:...] line is MANDATORY for automated tracking.

Category breakdown (categories= segment)

Classify every finding (blocking + important + suggestion) into exactly one of the six dashboard categories, then emit the count per category in the marker. The six counts must sum to blocking + warnings + suggestions. Map by the audit that raised the finding:

Audit that raised the findingCategory
Securitysecurity
Clean Architecture, Strategic DDD, SOLIDlogic
Performanceperformance
TypeScript Best PracticestypeSafety
Testing, Code Qualitystyle
Outdated / vulnerable / misused dependencydependencies

Use the internal keys exactly: security, logic, performance, typeSafety, style, dependencies. Omit a key or set it to 0 when no finding falls in it. Unknown keys are ignored by the tracker.

Final reminder: This skill NEVER modifies code. The report and inline comments are posted via MCP actions so the author can make corrections.
