Goal: Plan a safe transition from evidenced current architecture to an explicit target, with reversibility limits and recovery actions. Change only the approved migration document; do not execute migrations, edit product code, build a generic task plan, approve delivery, or hide irreversible steps.
Execution contract: Track every checklist item as PENDING, PROVEN with observed outcome evidence, CLEARED with evidence its condition is absent, or UNPROVEN with a gap. Reading, delegation, tool failure, zero exit status, and self-reported success are not proof. Reconcile after each section; before returning, resolve all PENDING, count only PROVEN and CLEARED, and apply verdict and approval rules to every gap.
Preserve intent, scope, mode, and existing authorization. Complete authorized work before required external approval; ask only consequential unresolved choices. If nobody can answer, report the exact question and apply the skill's gap verdict without waiting or guessing. Cite any blocking instruction and unresolved boundary; never invent approval gates. Scale depth to material risk; preserve mandatory checks, dependencies, and safety order while choosing verification methods.
Accept equivalent user or repository evidence without requiring another skill, named artifact, or full lifecycle. Preserve source requirement and decision IDs. Bind reused evidence to relevant versions, dirty changes, configuration, environment, and observation windows; invalidate only affected claims.
Choose the primary workflow by outcome and explicit selection. Consume neighboring contracts and valid evidence without duplicating ownership or restarting audits. Split distinct deliverables by scope, not mandatory skill invocation. Broad independent assessments use audit workflows; focused domain reviews remain read-only.
On continuation, reconcile task, authorization, state, and gaps. Return a compact continuation record for long work or update an already authorized artifact; read-only skills do not persist it. Distinguish artifact readiness, verified behavior, and external-action authority.
Trace applicable requirements to their authoritative owner, planned or implemented change, acceptance evidence and status in the existing artifact or response; no new registry is required. Explicit constraints remain binding until an authorized deviation; risk determines priority, not permission to ignore them.
Investigate the causal flow beyond initially named files. Within implementation authority, include structural repair needed for the outcome; minimize total complexity and risk, not changed lines. This does not authorize unrelated cleanup or mutation during review.
Before retrieval, define the evidence question; read selectively without skipping applicable instructions. Use tools for mechanical processing; summarize bounded results, errors, coverage, and source paths, keeping full output outside context.
Before technical decisions, establish applicability and actual versions; verify version-dependent assumptions against official documentation or specifications. Search and read primary pages for current external recommendations; snippets are not evidence. Version-matched bundled documentation or valid prior evidence suffices. Record decision, version, source, and limitations. Mark unavailable evidence UNVERIFIED; block only essential dependent work. Prefer native mechanisms, justify added tools or abstractions with evidence, and reuse the existing rule owner.
| Need | Preferred capability | Fallback |
|---|---|---|
| Current and target states | Repository evidence plus approved architecture artifacts | Explicit user-provided states with limitations |
| Consumers and compatibility | Language intelligence, schema tools, config search, telemetry, and direct inspection | Conservative inventory marked UNVERIFIED |
| Data scale and runtime risk | Production metrics, checked-in reports, migrations, and workload evidence | Ranges with validation gates before execution |
| External migration constraints | Official vendor migration and compatibility guidance | Mark dependent phases BLOCKED or UNVERIFIED |
| Document mutation | Minimal patch to the approved migration-plan artifact | Return BLOCKED when authority or path is unclear |
A migration phase must leave the system in a supported state. Additive and reversible steps precede cutover; destructive cleanup follows verified zero use.
This workflow owns the architecture transition plan and compatibility sequence, not migration execution. Database lifecycle changes consume that sequence without redefining its business or architectural commitments.
docs/architecture/migration-plan.md.BLOCKED rather than invent either state.Choose the fewest applicable, independently verifiable phases from preparation, shadow or coexistence, progressive migration, cutover, stabilization, and old-path removal. Do not force shadow or progressive migration for an approved offline atomic transition; preserve applicable compatibility, recovery, irreversible-action, and entry/exit evidence requirements.
For every phase, state prerequisites, changed architecture state, owner, entry gate, observable success, abort condition, rollback or roll-forward action, and exit evidence.
Define feature flags, routing controls, canary cohorts, rate limits, maintenance windows, and blast-radius controls where justified.
Define metrics, logs, traces, reconciliation reports, dashboards, alerts, and SLO gates needed before traffic or data movement.
Keep old and new versions interoperable through realistic deployment ordering and rollback windows.
Resolve compatibility and data-preservation policy explicitly; a target-only preference does not authorize discarding supported contracts or saved data. Preserve accepted exceptions and their removal conditions.
READY only when no unresolved decision changes planned data semantics, compatibility, phase order, or recovery; INCOMPLETE for a useful plan with any such decision or missing gate/rollback rule. Assigning an owner or deferring a decision to a phase gate does not resolve it. Use BLOCKED only when scope, authority, essential current/target evidence, or safe document creation cannot be established. Pending live verification alone is an execution prerequisite, not a reason to block a useful plan.Report in the user's language, in this order; label all five fields and state each fact once. Use controlled plain language: one fact per sentence, usually under 20 words, active voice, and one term per concept, with no synonyms for verdicts, IDs, or states. Small results may use one line per field; omit empty tables and do not copy linked artifacts:
Checklist: X/Y complete; Incomplete: None or each UNPROVEN item's reason, outcome impact, and exact next action; residual risks and required decisions.Skill-specific evidence: Artifact path; current/target gap, consumers, dependencies, and protected invariants. Summarize phases with entry gates, changes, success evidence, abort conditions, rollback/roll-forward; data/coexistence/reconciliation/cutover/removal proof; and open decisions that affect safety, ordering, or reversibility. When there are more than a few phases and the host renders Markdown diagrams, add one Mermaid phase-and-gate diagram; keep the text complete without it.
