Use when a carrier asks how to improve MPG, lower fuel cost per mile, manage fuel surcharge, set up a fuel-purchase strategy (in-network vs out-of-network), train drivers on fuel-efficient driving, spec new tractors for fuel economy, or benchmark fleet MPG against industry averages.

Fuel is the #1 or #2 cost center for every motor carrier (typically 25–35% of operating cost per mile). One full MPG improvement on a 130,000-mile/year tractor at $3.80/gallon diesel saves ~$8,000 per truck per year.
| Tractor profile | Typical MPG (loaded) | Top quartile |
|---|---|---|
| Sleeper, 80,000 lb GCW, 65 mph | 6.5–7.2 | 8.0+ |
| Day cab, regional, 70,000 lb GCW | 6.8–7.5 | 8.5+ |
| LTL pickup-and-delivery | 5.5–6.5 | 7.0+ |
| Heavy-spec tanker / flatbed | 5.5–6.5 | 7.2+ |
| Driving behavior | MPG impact |
|---|---|
| Cruise control on flat highway | +0.3–0.5 MPG |
| Reducing average speed from 68 → 62 mph | +0.5–1.0 MPG |
| Reducing idle time (10% → 3% idle) | +0.4–0.6 MPG |
| Progressive shifting / skip shifting (manual) | +0.2 MPG |
| Smooth acceleration (no jackrabbit starts) | +0.3 MPG |
| Following distance > 7 seconds (less brake/throttle) | +0.2–0.4 MPG |
A driver scoring 80% on these levers vs a driver scoring 50% delivers 1.0–1.5 MPG difference. That's $8K–$12K per truck per year — bigger than most safety bonuses.
| Spec | MPG impact | Cost / payback |
|---|---|---|
| Aerodynamic tractor (cab fairings, side skirts) | +0.5–1.0 | Built into truck cost |
| Trailer side skirts | +0.4–0.6 | $1,800–$2,500 / 12–18 months |
| Trailer tails / boat tails | +0.3–0.5 | $1,500–$2,500 / 18–24 months |
| Low-rolling-resistance tires | +0.3–0.5 | Premium pricing / 6–12 months |
| Wide-base singles | +0.3–0.5 | Weight savings 800 lb + fuel |
| Automated manual transmission | +0.2–0.4 | $5,000+ / hard to isolate ROI |
| APU (auxiliary power unit) for sleeper | +0.5–1.0 (offsets idle) | $9,000–$12,000 / 18–30 months |
| Battery HVAC | +0.5–1.0 (offsets idle) | $4,000–$7,000 / 12–24 months |
FSC is a separate line on the rate sheet that adjusts weekly based on the DOE national diesel average. Standard formula:
FSC ($/mile) = (Current DOE Price - Base Price) / Target MPG
Example: DOE = $3.80, base = $1.25, target MPG = 6.0 → FSC = $0.425/mile
Always pursue separate-line FSC. Carriers that "build fuel into the rate" lose money on every price spike.
Most carriers run a fuel-card program (Comdata, EFS, Wex, RTS, etc.) with negotiated discounts at major stops (TA/Petro, Pilot/Flying J, Love's). Discount: typically $0.04–$0.10/gallon off cash retail.
A driver who fuels off-network at convenience stations: $0.30–$0.50 per gallon overpaid.
Buying in low-tax states (TX, MO, OK, WY) vs high-tax (CT, PA, IN) doesn't save money since IFTA settles tax based on miles driven per state, not where fuel is purchased. But:
Idle = 0 MPG. A truck idling 8 hours per night burns 0.8 gallons/hour × 8 = 6.4 gallons = $24/night × 300 nights = $7,200/year per truck.
| Solution | Up-front cost | Annual idle-fuel savings | Other |
|---|---|---|---|
| APU (diesel) | $9–12K | $6,000–$7,000 | Hours-of-service exempt 49 CFR 393.28 |
| Battery HVAC | $4–7K | $4,500–$5,500 | Quiet, lighter weight |
| Bunk heater + 12V cab cooler | $2–3K | $2,500–$3,500 | Cold-weather only fix |
| Truck-stop electrification | $0 (per-use fee) | $4,000+ | Limited locations |
| Anti-idle policy + driver training | $0 | $2,000–$5,000 | Hardest to enforce |
Most state anti-idling laws cap idling at 5 minutes (CA, CT, MA, NJ, NY, PA, etc.). Fines $300–$25,000 per violation. Compliance with idle laws is a separate value driver from fuel savings.
For every 1 mph over 55, MPG drops ~0.1. A fleet running 70 mph vs 62 mph loses ~0.8 MPG. At 130K miles/year, that's $4,200/truck of pure speed cost — before insurance and CSA implications.
Top-quartile carriers cap road speed at 62–65 mph electronically.
FEI = MPG / Average MPG of fleet × 100
A driver scoring 110 is 10% above fleet average. Pay safety/fuel bonus on FEI tiers (e.g., 105+ tier 1, 110+ tier 2, 115+ tier 3) — drivers self-select into the efficient cohort.
X3 imports ELD fuel-event data and rolls up per-driver and per-truck MPG. The driver scorecard widget shows fuel-economy rank and dollar-impact estimate of getting to the fleet median.
Fuel optimization sits between operations (dispatcher routing) and safety (speed and idle policy) — coordinate both teams.
