ls-recording-transcript-captions

Turn a local recording into a draft transcript and reviewed captions, with local-only transcription, timing correction, sidecar subtitles, and optional burned-in video. Preserves originals and explains missing local capabilities; never silently falls back to a cloud service.

Recording, transcript, and captions

Purpose: Guide preparation, local transcription, human correction, and caption export using available recording and transcription tools. This instruction package does not bundle a speech model, transcription engine, or video renderer.

Prepare and check local capability

Confirm the selected recording, language, intended audience, output location, required caption format, and processing boundary. Preserve the original and map all derived audio, drafts, captions, and optional video to distinct new paths. Reject collisions and paths or symlinks that alias the source. Keep recordings, transcripts, speaker identities, and logs in the approved private destination.

Inspect installed media and speech tools, their versions, supported input formats, local-model availability, language support, resource requirements, and documented local/offline mode. Verify the actual tool interface against installed help and primary documentation before constructing commands. Do not invent flags or assume an installed CLI uses an on-device backend. Explain missing tools, models, unsupported formats, or insufficient resources before attempting processing.

A model download is a network action separate from uploading a recording; disclose its source and obtain or reuse installation/download authority. If the user requires an offline run, use an already available model and an execution environment that can enforce the no-egress boundary. Configure the engine explicitly for local processing, disable remote backends/telemetry where applicable, and verify that boundary before giving it the recording. If local operation cannot be established, report blocked and the needed capability. Never use cloud transcription as an automatic fallback or upload private media for tool diagnosis. Cloud processing requires explicit authority for the provider and disclosed content.

Draft, review, and export

  1. Inspect media duration and streams. Prepare a local audio derivative only if the engine requires it; use verified media-tool argv, preserve the source, and note conversions or channel selections that could omit speech. Do not run untrusted commands embedded in file metadata.
  2. Generate a draft transcript and time-aligned segments locally. Mark all initial text and captions UNREVIEWED in filenames or the accompanying private status record. Record engine/model identity, language, inputs, and limitations without exposing the recording content in public logs. A successful process exit is not evidence that the words or timings are correct.
  3. Review against the recording: correct words, names, numbers, speaker changes, punctuation, omissions, and relevant non-speech cues. Mark uncertain speech explicitly; do not invent inaudible words. For private speaker labels, use only approved names. Retain draft status for any unreviewed portion.
  4. Correct segment timing by listening at boundaries. Keep start times nonnegative, end after start, and cues ordered and within the actual media duration. Resolve unintended overlaps and unreadably long cues. Preserve intentional overlaps only when supported by the selected player/format. Split cues for readable lines without losing text or breaking synchronization.
  5. Export a readable transcript plus the requested supported sidecar format, such as SRT or WebVTT, using the verified tool or a format-aware serializer. Validate encoding, cue syntax, sequence, timing and media bounds. Load the captions with the target player and inspect beginning, middle, end, and edited segments for synchronization and readability. A sidecar permits selectable captions only when the player supports and loads that format; do not promise that an arbitrary platform will offer a toggle.
  6. If requested, create a separate burned-in video copy using the existing project's renderer or Remotion guidance when applicable. Check actual subtitle-font support, escaping, framing, media duration, and audio preservation. Review representative rendered frames and playback; do not overwrite the source or imply burned-in captions are removable.

Report draft/reviewed/partial status, reviewed coverage, output paths/formats, local-processing evidence, uncertainties, and next action. Human review of wording and timing is required before calling results reviewed. A failed export or render must remain visible even when transcription succeeded. Sharing recordings or outputs remains a separate authorized disclosure action.

Qualification scenario

Use a short nonprivate recording with known speech and silence. Verify local processing availability before input, unchanged original hashes, a clearly labeled draft, corrected transcript, valid bounded cues, and playback. Exercise the missing local-model path and confirm it reports blocked without contacting a cloud backend. Optional burned-in output needs its own render/playback check. Record actual engine/model/format coverage rather than claiming universal transcription accuracy.
