Copywriting is salesmanship in print. This skill teaches writing copy that moves readers to act: understanding the audience deeply, structuring persuasive arguments, writing headlines that earn attention, and crafting CTAs that convert. It applies to ads, landing pages, emails, sales pages, and product descriptions.
The core belief: great copy comes from research, not inspiration. Know the customer's words, pains, and desires, then reflect them back clearly.
Writing a landing page or sales page
Creating ad copy (search, social, display)
Drafting email subject lines and body copy
Writing product descriptions that sell
Crafting headlines for articles or pages
Rewriting underperforming copy to lift conversions
Naming products or features (naming is copywriting under pressure)
Writing video scripts and ad storyboards
Crafting onboarding emails and in-app microcopy
Writing landing pages and sales pages
Crafting brand taglines and slogans
Developing email sequences
Voice of customer research. Mine reviews, support tickets, surveys, and forums for the exact words customers use. The best headlines are often customer quotes. Organize findings into pains, desires, objections, and decision triggers.
Features vs. benefits. Features describe; benefits sell. "256GB storage" is a feature; "carry your entire photo library everywhere" is a benefit. Always translate features into outcomes the reader cares about.
Persuasion frameworks. AIDA (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action) for short copy; PAS (Problem, Agitate, Solve) for pain-driven offers; Before-After-Bridge for transformation stories; the 4 Ps (Promise, Picture, Proof, Push) for sales pages. Pick the framework that fits the reader's awareness level.
Awareness levels. Unaware → problem-aware → solution-aware → product-aware → most aware. Copy for the unaware educates; copy for the most aware just needs the offer and a reason to act now. Mismatching awareness level is the most common copy failure.
Headline formulas. Specific numbers ("7 emails"), curiosity gaps ("the mistake costing you..."), direct benefits ("double your..."), how-tos, and questions. Write 10–20 headlines per piece; the first is rarely the best.
Microcopy. Button labels, form hints, error messages, and empty states — small text with outsized conversion impact. Rules: buttons describe the outcome (Get my report, not Submit), errors explain what happened and how to fix it, and every form field earns its place or gets cut.
The slippery slide. Every sentence's job is to get the next sentence read. Openings especially must create momentum — start mid-action or with the reader's problem, never with throat-clearing.
Headline formulas. How-to ("How to [desirable outcome] without [pain]"), number-driven ("7 [things] that [benefit]"), question ("Are you making these [mistakes]?"), and proof-led ("How [company] [achieved result]"). Write 25 headlines per piece; the first 10 are obvious, the winners hide in 15–25. Test headlines wherever traffic allows — they carry 80% of the weight. Storytelling structure. Hook (the moment of tension) → struggle (the attempts that failed) → discovery (the turning point) → transformation (the result) → invitation (the reader's next step). Stories sell because brains are wired for narrative, not bullet points — use story for emotion, bullets for proof. Tone matching. Match the reader's state: anxious buyers need reassurance, excited buyers need momentum, skeptical buyers need proof. Same product, three tones for three mindsets. Read the room before writing a word.
Headline checklist: Is it specific? Does it promise a benefit? Would the target reader care in 3 seconds? Does it avoid cleverness that obscures meaning?
The 5-pass edit: 1) structure (does the argument flow?), 2) cuts (remove 25%), 3) clarity (would a smart 12-year-old follow?), 4) voice (read aloud — fix anything awkward), 5) power (strengthen verbs, headlines, CTAs). Never combine passes — each needs fresh eyes.
Landing page copy flow: headline (outcome + differentiation) → subhead (how it works, briefly) → social proof (logos, numbers, testimonials) → benefits (3–5, each with proof) → objection handling (FAQ) → final CTA (restate the offer). Every section answers the reader's next question — anticipate the sequence of doubts. Voice development: collect 20+ examples of copy that feels right → extract patterns (sentence length, vocabulary, humor level) → write the anti-examples (what we never sound like) → test with 5 pieces. Voice guides with only adjectives fail; examples succeed.
