Overview

Email remains the highest-ROI digital channel when done well. This skill covers the full email marketing practice: growing a quality list, writing emails people open, building automation flows (welcome, nurture, abandonment, win-back), protecting deliverability, and measuring revenue impact.

Vendor-neutral: principles apply to any email service provider.

When to use

  • Starting an email program from zero

  • Writing a campaign (newsletter, launch, promotion)

  • Building automation sequences (welcome series, cart abandonment)

  • Fixing low open rates or spam-folder placement

  • Segmenting a list for better targeting

  • Planning a product launch email sequence

  • Migrating email providers without losing deliverability or data

  • Building a preference center that reduces unsubscribes

  • Planning holiday or Q4 promotional calendars

  • Rebuilding sender reputation after deliverability issues

  • Launching a newsletter from zero

  • Integrating email with lifecycle marketing

Core concepts

List quality over size. A 5,000-person engaged list beats 50,000 cold contacts. Grow with opt-in lead magnets (useful resources, not "subscribe to our newsletter"), and never buy lists. Clean inactive subscribers regularly.

Segmentation and personalization. Segment by behavior (purchased, browsed, inactive), lifecycle stage, and preferences. Personalization goes beyond first names: content blocks based on past purchases or interests lift clicks substantially.

The anatomy of a good email. Subject line (curiosity + clarity, under 50 characters), preview text (extends the subject, don't waste it), single clear CTA above the fold, scannable body, plain-text feel for personal emails vs. designed templates for promotions. One email, one job.

Automation flows. The money is in flows: welcome series (3–5 emails introducing value), abandoned cart/browse (2–3 emails with increasing urgency), post-purchase (thank you, how-to, review request, cross-sell), win-back (re-engagement for dormant subscribers), replenishment reminders for consumables.

Deliverability. Sender reputation is everything: authenticate (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), warm up new domains gradually, keep complaint rates under 0.1%, remove hard bounces immediately, and avoid spam-trigger patterns (ALL CAPS, excessive exclamation, misleading subjects).

Deliverability mechanics. Inbox placement depends on: sender reputation (domain + IP), engagement signals (opens, replies, not-spam clicks), authentication (SPF/DKIM/DMARC aligned), list hygiene (bounces and complaints removed), and content signals. Major providers increasingly filter by engagement — mail that nobody opens eventually stops reaching the inbox at all.

Sunset policies. Define inactivity thresholds (e.g., no opens in 180 days → re-engagement campaign → suppress if still inactive). Continuing to mail the chronically unengaged actively harms deliverability for engaged subscribers.

Segmentation models. Demographic (who they are), behavioral (what they do), lifecycle (new, active, at-risk, lapsed), and predictive (likely to buy, likely to churn). Start with lifecycle — it is simple and powerful — then layer behavioral triggers. Broadcasts to everyone should be the exception, not the default. Subject line science. 40–50 characters (mobile cutoff), curiosity + clarity (not clickbait), personalization where genuine, and A/B testing on 10–20% samples before full sends. Preheaders are second subject lines — never leave them as "view in browser." Preference centers. Let subscribers choose topics and frequency instead of binary subscribe/unsubscribe. Well-designed preference centers cut unsubscribes 20–40%. Offer "pause for 30 days" — it saves subscribers who would otherwise leave forever.

Practical workflow

  1. Set up foundations. Choose a provider, authenticate the domain, create a master template, set up preference center and unsubscribe flows. Establish baseline metrics.
  2. Build the list. Place opt-in forms at high-intent points (checkout, blog, popups with genuine offers). Create 1–2 lead magnets tied to your best content. Track source quality, not just volume.
  3. Launch core flows first. Welcome series and post-purchase flows generate revenue on autopilot — build these before fancy campaigns.
  4. Plan campaigns. Monthly calendar: mix value emails (education, stories, curation) with promotional ones (roughly 3:1). Every campaign gets: goal, segment, subject + preview, body, CTA, send time.
  5. Write and test. Write subject lines last, in batches of 5–10, and pick the strongest. A/B test one variable at a time (subject, CTA, send time). Test on mobile — most opens happen there.
  6. Measure and iterate. Track: open rate, click-through rate, conversion rate, revenue per email, unsubscribe rate, list growth. Benchmark against your own history, not industry averages. Double down on what converts.

Launch sequence skeleton: teaser (day -7) → announcement (day 0) → social proof (day 2) → objection handling (day 4) → urgency/close (day 6) → last call (day 7).

Deliverability monitoring routine (monthly): check placement via seed tests, review bounce and complaint rates by campaign, audit authentication records, prune inactive segments, and verify list-growth sources are not adding low-quality addresses.

Welcome series (5 emails): immediate: delivery of promised value + brand story → day 2: best content or products → day 4: social proof → day 7: expectation-setting (what you will receive) → day 10: first soft offer. Welcome emails get 4x the open rates of regular campaigns — this is your highest-leverage sequence. Re-engagement campaign: identify inactives (no opens 90–180 days) → "we miss you" with best-of content → incentive offer → final warning ("should we stop emailing?") → suppress non-responders. Winning back 5–10% is typical; the real win is list hygiene from suppressing the rest.

Common pitfalls

  • Buying or scraping lists. Guarantees spam complaints, blacklists, and legal trouble. Build organically.
  • Emailing everyone everything. Unsegmented blasts train subscribers to ignore you. Segment or lose.
  • Weak subject lines. The subject decides the open; everything else is irrelevant if it's skipped. Spend real time here.
  • No welcome series. New subscribers are most engaged in the first 48 hours. Silence then is wasted opportunity.
  • Ignoring deliverability. Beautiful emails in the spam folder convert at zero. Monitor placement and reputation.
  • Too many CTAs. Multiple competing calls-to-action split attention. One email, one primary CTA.
  • Never cleaning the list. Inactive subscribers drag down deliverability. Sunset the chronically unengaged.
  • Hiding the unsubscribe link. Frustrated subscribers hit spam instead — far worse for deliverability. Make unsubscribing easy; offer a preference center as an alternative.
  • Image-only emails. Image blocking renders them blank. Maintain a healthy text-to-image ratio and never put critical info (like the CTA) only in images.
  • Buying email lists. Guaranteed spam traps, complaints, and reputation damage. Build organically or do not email.
  • No mobile optimization. 60%+ opens on mobile. Single-column, 14px+ fonts, thumb-friendly CTAs — non-negotiable.
