agentic-engineering

Organize engineering work carried out by AI agents with clear completion criteria, small verifiable tasks, and evaluations before and after implementation. Match model choice to task complexity and track tokens, retries, time, and outcomes to manage cost.

OriginalShow the original description

Operate as an agentic engineer using eval-first execution, decomposition, and cost-aware model routing. Use when planning or executing engineering work that agents will carry out end to end.

Good for

  • Planning development work for AI agents
  • Splitting a large change into independently verifiable tasks
  • Comparing evaluations before and after implementation
  • Tracking model choices, cost, and retries

Overview

What it does

This skill organizes development from planning through evaluation when AI agents handle most implementation. Before work begins, it defines completion criteria and evaluation methods. It records baseline results, repeats the evaluations after implementation, and compares the changes. Work is divided into roughly 15-minute units, each independently verifiable, with a clear main risk and completion condition.

When it helps

Use it when handing development to an agent and wanting consistent task boundaries and quality checks. Reviews of generated code prioritize required conditions, edge cases, error handling, authentication assumptions, and the effects of changes. It also covers switching sessions at major milestones and summarizing conversations.

Example requests

  • “Break this development work into independently verifiable tasks and define when each is complete.”
  • “Set up evaluations to compare results before and after implementation, including checks for effects on existing features.”
  • “Record the model, token estimate, retries, and elapsed time for each task.”

Notes

The model guidance assigns Haiku to narrow edits, Sonnet to implementation and refactoring, and Opus to design and root-cause analysis. Move to a higher model tier when the reason the lower tier failed is clear. People remain responsible for quality and risk management.

This overview was written by AI (OpenAI Codex) from the public SKILL.md. Check the original below for the exact behavior.

Objective evaluation

AI rated this skill on four points using only the contents of its SKILL.md. Stars and popularity are not taken into account.

Clear instructionsIs it clear when to use it and what it does?
AGoodIt identifies agent-led implementation as the use case and specifies completion criteria, task decomposition, and evaluations.
Concrete stepsAre steps, inputs, outputs, and examples spelled out?
AGoodIt specifies a four-step evaluation loop, conditions for 15-minute task units, and fields to record for each task.
SafetyAre sending data, deleting files, and running commands disclosed?
AGoodIt assigns quality and risk controls to humans and contains no instructions to delete files or send data externally.
Easy setupDoes it need few tools or API keys, and are they documented?
AGoodIt provides model-role guidance but specifies no mandatory tools or API keys.

The total counts each point as A = 25, B = 15, C = 5. Rated by AI (OpenAI Codex) as of Oct 19, 2026. Treat it as a guide and read the original before installing.

Agentic Engineering

Use this skill for engineering workflows where AI agents perform most implementation work and humans enforce quality and risk controls.

Operating Principles

  1. Define completion criteria before execution.
  2. Decompose work into agent-sized units.
  3. Route model tiers by task complexity.
  4. Measure with evals and regression checks.

Eval-First Loop

  1. Define capability eval and regression eval.
  2. Run baseline and capture failure signatures.
  3. Execute implementation.
  4. Re-run evals and compare deltas.

Task Decomposition

Apply the 15-minute unit rule:

  • each unit should be independently verifiable
  • each unit should have a single dominant risk
  • each unit should expose a clear done condition

Model Routing

  • Haiku: classification, boilerplate transforms, narrow edits
  • Sonnet: implementation and refactors
  • Opus: architecture, root-cause analysis, multi-file invariants

Session Strategy

  • Continue session for closely-coupled units.
  • Start fresh session after major phase transitions.
  • Compact after milestone completion, not during active debugging.

Review Focus for AI-Generated Code

Prioritize:

  • invariants and edge cases
  • error boundaries
  • security and auth assumptions
  • hidden coupling and rollout risk

Do not waste review cycles on style-only disagreements when automated format/lint already enforce style.

Cost Discipline

Track per task:

  • model
  • token estimate
  • retries
  • wall-clock time
  • success/failure

Escalate model tier only when lower tier fails with a clear reasoning gap.
