caveman-review

Review code changes and produce concise comments ready to paste into a pull request. Each finding includes its location, the problem, and a concrete fix, with fuller explanations for security issues, architectural disagreements, or authors who need context.

OriginalShow the original description

Compressed code review - one line per finding with location, problem and fix. Use for /caveman-review, "review this PR", or "review the diff".

AI rating100/ 100See how to install

Good for

  • Reviewing a pull request
  • Shortening lengthy review comments
  • Pairing findings with concrete fixes
  • Separating bugs, risks, and minor suggestions

Overview

What it does

Review code changes and turn each finding into a comment that normally fits on one line: location, problem, and a concrete fix. Comments preserve exact line numbers and function or variable names. For changes spanning multiple files, they also include filenames. Bugs, risks, minor suggestions, and questions are distinguished so the comments can be pasted into a pull request. Unnecessary introductions and restatements of the code are removed, making the requested change clear.

When it helps

Use it when long review comments make it difficult to identify what needs attention. It also helps when you want findings to include specific fixes, or when you need to communicate questions separately from proposed changes.

Example requests

  • “Review this PR and summarize each finding on one line with its line number, problem, and fix.”
  • “Write comments for this diff that distinguish bugs from risks.”

Notes

The skill only creates review comments. It does not edit code, approve or request changes, or run linters. For security findings, architectural disagreements, and explanations for beginners, it uses normal paragraphs to provide reasons and any necessary references.

This overview was written by AI (OpenAI Codex) from the public SKILL.md. Check the original below for the exact behavior.

Objective evaluation

AI rated this skill on four points using only the contents of its SKILL.md. Stars and popularity are not taken into account.

Clear instructionsIs it clear when to use it and what it does?
AGoodPR and diff reviews are explicit triggers, with one-line comments containing location, problem, and fix.
Concrete stepsAre steps, inputs, outputs, and examples spelled out?
AGoodIt provides a line-number format, finding categories, before-and-after examples, and conditions for switching to paragraph explanations.
SafetyAre sending data, deleting files, and running commands disclosed?
AGoodThe scope is comment generation; code edits, approvals, change requests, and linter execution are explicitly excluded.
Easy setupDoes it need few tools or API keys, and are they documented?
AGoodThe instructions consist of comment-formatting rules and examples, with no additional tools or credentials specified.

The total counts each point as A = 25, B = 15, C = 5. Rated by AI (OpenAI Codex) as of Oct 20, 2026. Treat it as a guide and read the original before installing.

SKILL.md (original)

Review the instructions the agent will receive before you install.

Write code review comments terse and actionable. One line per finding. Location, problem, fix. No throat-clearing.

Rules

Format: L<line>: <problem>. <fix>. — or <file>:L<line>: ... when reviewing multi-file diffs.

Severity prefix (optional, when mixed):

  • 🔴 bug: — broken behavior, will cause incident
  • 🟡 risk: — works but fragile (race, missing null check, swallowed error)
  • 🔵 nit: — style, naming, micro-optim. Author can ignore
  • ❓ q: — genuine question, not a suggestion

Drop:

  • "I noticed that...", "It seems like...", "You might want to consider..."
  • "This is just a suggestion but..." — use nit: instead
  • "Great work!", "Looks good overall but..." — say it once at the top, not per comment
  • Restating what the line does — the reviewer can read the diff
  • Hedging ("perhaps", "maybe", "I think") — if unsure use q:

Keep:

  • Exact line numbers
  • Exact symbol/function/variable names in backticks
  • Concrete fix, not "consider refactoring this"
  • The why if the fix isn't obvious from the problem statement

Examples

❌ "I noticed that on line 42 you're not checking if the user object is null before accessing the email property. This could potentially cause a crash if the user is not found in the database. You might want to add a null check here."

✅ L42: 🔴 bug: user can be null after .find(). Add guard before .email.

❌ "It looks like this function is doing a lot of things and might benefit from being broken up into smaller functions for readability."

✅ L88-140: 🔵 nit: 50-line fn does 4 things. Extract validate/normalize/persist.

❌ "Have you considered what happens if the API returns a 429? I think we should probably handle that case."

✅ L23: 🟡 risk: no retry on 429. Wrap in withBackoff(3).

Auto-Clarity

Drop terse mode for: security findings (CVE-class bugs need full explanation + reference), architectural disagreements (need rationale, not just a one-liner), and onboarding contexts where the author is new and needs the "why". In those cases write a normal paragraph, then resume terse for the rest.

Boundaries

Reviews only — does not write the code fix, does not approve/request-changes, does not run linters. Output the comment(s) ready to paste into the PR. "stop caveman-review" or "normal mode": revert to verbose review style.

Delegate code lookup, small edits, and diff reviews to three specialized subagents. Their compact, structured results help conserve the main agent's context, with guidance on when to delegate and when to keep work in the main conversation.

  • Locating definitions and callers
  • Making a focused edit across one or two files
  • Reviewing a diff for bugs
