Form and maintain an execution strategy: choose order, effort, evidence timing and continuity to improve the complete requested result. A settled goal can still leave those choices open. Clear local work and mature routes with applicable evidence can proceed directly.
Recover the requested outcome, acceptance, settled choices, permissions, selected task record, relevant implementation and important unknowns. Inspect enough code to name real touchpoints; use an identified area when exact paths remain unknown. Distinguish the user's chosen result, a proposed mechanism, observed facts and ordinary details left to the implementer. A polished brief is not verified repository design. Investigate searchable facts yourself without re-interviewing settled goals.
Use this method when an unresolved execution choice materially affects downstream work, quality, evidence or handoff: a shared unverified assumption, consequential ordering, meaningful stages or recovery, or new evidence invalidating the current route. Explicit planning requests also enter here. File count, tool count, prompt length and the label “complex” are not sufficient triggers. An ongoing causal investigation stays with Debug; add Plan only for the resulting execution or recovery arrangement.
Keep existing owners and lanes. Plan organizes execution; Design resolves material product/architecture choices, Spec Chain owns approved-spec coverage, Execute implements and returns observations, Delegate owns actual dispatch, and Verify/Finish govern acceptance and closure. Do not turn this into a new supervisory pipeline.
Resolve the judgments that can change the next meaningful result. These are not mandatory form fields:
Choose the first useful path through the real entry point and material state or boundary. If the route is understood, connect it and observe directly. Only investigate separately when the result could change the route; do not create a mandatory spike.
Match the observation's completeness to the judgment. A CLI success cannot accept a GUI interaction; blank placeholders cannot accept a composition whose result depends on image, title and feedback together. High-quality assets and production work can be early dependencies. A fixture or surrogate proves its named boundary only. The first observation informs the remaining work; it does not replace the complete delivery. An explicitly commissioned prototype stays within that prototype scope.
Examples:
Keep the complete scope visible, with near-term work concrete and later details conditional on relevant observations. Refine the next stage at a meaningful boundary, not every future function at the outset.
Important observations, user corrections, changed capabilities or invalid assumptions revise the affected decisions, stages and verification. Preserve independent goals and work. Correct a moved path or reuse an existing function directly. A disproved architectural premise needs the appropriate Design or Debug work before its dependents continue; it does not restart the entire intake. When repeated probes add no distinguishing evidence, change the investigation or making approach rather than perpetually “exploring once more.”
Review the strategy once for full coverage, genuine dependencies, authority, representative evidence, compatibility and unnecessary machinery. Fix gaps directly; do not add a reviewer by default. When the next path, permission and acceptance are sufficiently clear, end this planning intervention. For an implementation request, continue executing to the requested endpoint without another “continue?” gate.
Actively create or update a durable record when work crosses sessions or executors, meaningful stages have dependencies or decisions not recoverable from a diff, migration/rollout/interruption needs exact boundaries, lanes share status, or the user requests a document. A routine locate/fix/test sequence is not three independent stages. A clear session-sized task can keep an inline strategy.
Reuse the selected task record and repository convention first. Add a missing section rather than rewrite a valid plan to fit a template. Without an existing convention, docs/plans/<task-slug>.md is a fallback for shared engineering plans; a specification can live in docs/specs/. These are not required directories.
Choose visibility deliberately: share engineering goals, consequential decisions and evidence pointers appropriate to the repository audience; keep private conversations, account details, sensitive local context and raw session traces in the established private location. A shared plan must support its public scope without hidden private prerequisites. In a read-only task, do not write the target repository; deliver a requested document in an allowed output location and identify that boundary.
Default to one main plan with stages inside it. Split a stage only for a distinct owner/context or evidence volume that makes the split useful. The main entry retains the complete outcome, stage dependencies, selected continuation and unfinished scope.
Bind by explicit task path or established task entry, never by a repository-wide mutable active_plan.md or newest modification time. Concurrent tasks keep their selected entries. Existing issues, stage tables or native task lists can supply information by link or projection; do not duplicate synonymous progress sources or Spec Chain's ledger.
Use repository vocabulary to express:
Distinguish planned, in progress, implemented but unverified, verified under stated conditions, blocked, cancelled and superseded states. These are semantic distinctions, not a new parser schema. One “done” cannot simultaneously mean source, installed, deployed and owner accepted.
A compact shape may be sufficient:
# <Task>
Status / owner / baseline: ...
Goal and acceptance: <request or spec link>
Current route: <why this order and effort; material conditions>
Stages and remaining scope: <results, dependencies, states or existing ledger>
Evidence: <observation, applicable baseline and location>
Continue here: <next result; blockers and independent work>
Changes / closure: <material reason, actual outcome or successor>
Update after a material result, invalidated assumption, stage transition, decision affecting later work, or deliberate handoff/ending. Keep current effective content first, revise superseded instructions, and retain concise reasons or historical links. Do not log every tool call, update on a timer, or spawn final-v2-revised documents. Unexpected interruption can leave stale records; recovery must tolerate that.
On resumption:
One designated maintainer, usually the current coordinator, owns shared-plan writes. Workers return results or write only their assigned files. Before updating, inspect current content and relevant diff so another writer's changes are not overwritten. Use existing ownership and workspace rules; do not add locks or a tracking service.
At completion record actual results, evidence and residual unverified state. On replacement link the successor; on pause or cancellation retain the reason rather than mark complete. Move lasting architecture or usage conclusions into the authoritative maintained docs and link them. Historical plans are not permanent runbooks and need not be deleted in bulk.
Carry goal, settled choices, current route, conditions, evidence, permission and unfinished scope across methods or executors in the same commission. Soundings Search/Study can supply facts; Shape can resolve material interpretations; Explore can supply judgeable candidates. Frontend Craft or another domain method owns representative content, assets, renderer and experience acceptance. Incorporate their consequences into this plan rather than start another brief, tracker or fixed pipeline. Do not copy their specialty into Plan or require their installation.
Keep user-facing output to meaningful route reasons, results and discoveries. Planning depth, output length, persistence and waiting for the user are separate choices. Native plan/task tools may display the same current stages but cannot substitute for necessary durable records; do not duplicate the whole plan in the UI. Without those tools, use available means. Automatic method use does not switch the harness into Plan Mode, justify a shim/hook, or prove support on an untested host.
If the request is planning only, deliver that artifact and stop. Otherwise continue the authorized implementation; unresolved authority blocks only the affected work.

Choose responsibility for substantial work before deep execution: keep one responsibility's coupled parts in a single lane, and hand a bounded or independent lane to a worker when clean context, an unknown cause, independent review, or coordinator attention materially improves the outcome.

Assess, adapt, and apply specified discussions, feedback, findings, or references to existing project work. Preserve coverage, corrections, and selected intent; judge fit and carry adopted effects through the authorized result. Includes technical review feedback; incidental sources or understanding material without a target-work adoption question need no separate incorporation workflow.
