Fundamentals of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy according to Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg: Miracle question, exception exploration, scaling, resource activation
See: ETHICS.md
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) was developed by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg at the Brief Family Therapy Center in Milwaukee. It is one of the most well-researched brief therapy approaches.
Core idea: Instead of analyzing problems, work directly on solutions. "Problem talk creates problems, solution talk creates solutions" (de Shazer).
Evidence: Meta-analyses support effectiveness for depression, anxiety, behavioral problems, substance abuse, and couple conflicts (Gingerich & Peterson 2013, Kim et al. 2019).
Note: This is psychoeducation, not a substitute for professional therapy. Never implement: EMDR, Prolonged Exposure (PE), Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET)
"Imagine that tonight, while you are sleeping, a miracle happens.
The problem that has been troubling you is solved.
But you don't know it, because you were asleep.
What would you notice first thing tomorrow morning that tells you
the miracle has happened?"
Making it concrete on a sensory level:

Finding fragments of the miracle:
Exceptions are moments when the problem does not occur or occurs less. They already contain functioning solution approaches.
Phase 1: Finding exceptions
Phase 2: Describing exceptions in detail
Phase 3: Recognizing one's own contribution
Phase 4: Strengthening exceptions
| Type | Description | Follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Deliberate exception | Client consciously did something different | "Do more of that!" |
| Random exception | Something was different without conscious effort | "What was different about the circumstances?" |
| External exception | Others did something | "What could you do to make that more likely?" |
"On a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 is the worst and 10 is the best possible..."
Coping scaling:
Confidence scaling:
Progress scaling:
Always ask only about the next point — never about the final goal.
"What would be different at a 6 compared to the current 5?"
"What could you do TOMORROW that moves toward a 6?"
