Design Rationale

Convince the room with structure, not feelings.

How to use

  • /design-rationale Apply rationale constraints to defend design decisions in this conversation.

Constraints

Rationale Structure

  • MUST include all four elements in one paragraph:
    1. What you chose
    2. What you didn't choose (and why)
    3. What principle guided the decision
    4. What outcome you expect
  • MUST connect to user behavior or business goals, not aesthetic preference
  • NEVER defend a design decision with "it feels right" or "it looks better"

Anticipate Objections

  • MUST address the most likely pushback before it's raised
  • SHOULD acknowledge what's lost by this choice (the tradeoff)
  • MUST have a fallback position if the primary argument doesn't land

Anti-Patterns

  • Defending decisions by appealing to authority ("Apple does it this way")
  • Using data as a shield without explaining the logic ("our A/B test showed...")
  • Getting defensive when challenged instead of engaging with the objection
  • Over-explaining simple decisions (not every choice needs a thesis)

Notice what's deliberately missing from a design. Restraint is a taste signal. Use when studying minimalist products, evaluating design maturity, or understanding the power of removal.

Explain the same design observation to a designer, a developer, and a non-technical stakeholder. Same insight, three languages. Use when working cross-functionally or presenting design decisions to mixed audiences.

Palette roles, restraint, semantic consistency, and when fewer colors means better design. Use when building color palettes, evaluating color usage, or diagnosing color-related design problems.

Understand the constraints a design was built under and evaluate quality within that context. Use when reviewing work that had limited time, budget, or team size, or when assessing whether constraints were handled well.

Structured exposure habits for building taste through relentless, intentional consumption. Not passive scrolling. Active intake across design, architecture, film, music, food, and culture. Use when building a taste practice, advising on professional development, or diagnosing why someone's design range feels narrow.

Consistent radii, pixel-perfect alignment, state coverage, and the details that signal design quality. Use when polishing designs, auditing quality, or evaluating whether a design is ready to ship.
